You have to get along with the trainer, and trust him or her. We used 4 trainers. Talked with every trainer about all of our horses. Even if they did not have the horse of subject.
We were open about it. Costed us, in the end, two of those trainers would not work for us.
Game can get personal, when it does, you are probably screwed.
