Casino/Hunch Bettors, Maybe?
Last year I saw the same thing happen one night at Mountaineer: Every #5 horse was opening up with $5K to win on them. It was strange, because the #5 in the 1st race was a 20/1 longshot with no form; the horse didn't run a lick, and finished well up the track.
When the same type of scenario played out in the 2nd race, my best guess was that some casino bettor with a lot of cash, or a hunch player, was simply playing every #5.
This hunch bettor lost their shirt that night as well, not cashing until a chalky #5 favorite scored in the 6th race.
It's just another good reason to keep a close on the early money -- Obviously there are nice overlay opportunities available if you can spot this type of misplaced action early on...
