I don't know of any hard and fast rule of thumb- I do know it relies on 3 things after the takeout and that is:
1-amount bet into the place pool
2-amount wagered on your selection assuming he runs 1st or 2nd,
3-the amount wagered on the other horse that runs 1st or 2nd.

There used to be a couple of guys (w/calculators) who sat in the stands at Laurel watching the tote and would estimate the show payoffs and wager or not according to their projections. seemed like a lot of work to me, but then I am not a place or show bettor.
