Growing up in Seattle in the '60s before sound pollution laws there would be military planes leaving Boeing field south of town, and by the time they got up to speed in the north part of town where I lived, you'd swear the sky was exploding. As a little kid, when I was outside, I'd run under something it scared me so bad.
Edit: Same thing when they were developing, and ultimately after it became popular, the 747s, would fly so low over the city. The flight patterns brought them right over the neighborhoods at like 500-700 feet. They were right there, right above you, and they were LOUD.
