Whatever one's opinion on the practice of pin- or freeze-firing, it is still performed fairly regularly and the instance of Solomini having a splint bone fired should not be taken as a rare, clandestine, or nefarious procedure. Note that Solomini himself has not been raced in over 4 months and has just gotten back onto the worktab only a couple of weeks ago so presumably the firing wasn't done to "keep him running"...
