The board of directors of the Thoroughbred Owners of California has scheduled an emergency meeting at Santa Anita on Thursday to discuss the uncertainty surrounding the 2014 racing schedule and future stabling issues at Southern California tracks.
Some proposals for a 2014 racing schedule would have the Santa Anita winter-spring meeting running through mid-June, instead of its customary closure on the third weekend of April. Del Mar, which runs a seven-week summer meeting, could seek a fall meeting, and has stated a desire to host a Breeders’ Cup meeting at that time of the year in the future.
Addressing a write-in question from horseplayer advocate Andy Asaro, Pegram said there is no chance of reducing the owner’s takeout from bets because the money is used to increase purses to attract bigger fields, more horses. He said SB 1072 raised the takeout on two- and three-horse wagers. “That helped raise purses by $20 million in the last two years,” Pegram said. “That’s a 17 percent increase over the previous year." He said losing that money would cripple Southern California racing and destroy Northern California racing.
