I wouldn't call it "bizarre". He made a decision that backfired. Those two leaders looked like they were drifting out coming around the turn, and he thought the rail was going to be wide open. Most likely unnecessary, but given how he rode around the first turn, he probably still had thoughts of "save ground" in his head.
