If you ask him why, he'll joke about it and tell you he doesn't know. But I think it's probably because he does not work his horses hard or frequently. Once he gets them fit off a layoff with a series of slow works, all they do is gallop every day. He'll occasionally throw in a short breeze if the horse hasn't run in awhile because he couldn't find a spot, but mostly they are just galloping. His goal is not maximizing his win%. It's to keep his horses sound, teach them how to finish, and try to spot them where they at least fit. That style works better on turf.
Most of the top dirt trainers seem to work their horses much harder and faster, but maybe that's why they often don't last as long.
One other thing. He's a hell of a nice guy.

Yeah that makes sense his last 4 Turfers have hit the board at decent prices although not getting the win
I'm hoping he can sneak one of these in today for a nice price across the board and catch folks sleeping
