The electoral college is part and parcel within a republic form of government. Only those that don't understand the logic of it, or can gain politically, endorse it's end. It's one of the things that separates a republic from true democracy. A republic is a superior form of government than a democracy as history has shown clearly for 2500 years. A republic gives the vocal minority a chance, whereas most democracies have either turned into mob rule or deteriorated from within. A republic gives a society a real opportunity for balance. A democracy, once headed downhill, just picks up momentum until it leads to endless civil unrest as the only outlet for the minority's grievances. It's actually been in motion in the USA for over 100 years now.
