Kaepernick had been relegated to second string behind Blaine Gabbert when he decided to take a knee and kill his career, his career was already in severe decline. The league had exposed his flaws and he could not fix them. He was requesting a trade and no one was offering more than a 4th round pick and bottom 5 starter money or back up pay. He couldn't run a traditional NFL offense, so he isn't even desirable as a 2nd string QB. If he hadn't sabotaged his career he would be where RG3 is now, looking for a 3rd string QB job.
