When you turn the head back you lose a little momentum and that is where the whip comes into play to get the horse moving full speed again. That couldn't have happened in this case. He made the right decision in terms of trying to win the race, unfortunately Midnight Bourbon went down. Had he yanked the horse's head he would have lost the race.
