It's genetic code which evolved over millions of generations. The physical form of the butterfly is written in that code, as is it' succeeding form of butterfly is also written.
Not within the caterpillar itself. Except as the same genetic material are in every stage of it's existence All 4 stages of it's life cycle are all within that genetic code. Carried from birth to death.
We only "see" at any one time, one part of it's transformation

All butterflies have "complete metamorphosis." To grow into an adult they go through 4 stages: egg, larva, pupa and adult. Each stage has a different goal - for instance, caterpillars need to eat a lot, and adults need to reproduce.
I guess you think the chicken is still in it's egg after it hatches
