A question with a myriad of answers.
Regarding rewards for workers. Each trainer is in control and the form it takes is very different
Here's the different ways it can play out. For grooms
1% of the winning purse. Stakes only
1% of any purse money. Stakes only.
1% of any purse in ANY type of race.
Barn workers can also reap rewards from Jockeys and their agents.
I would often get the names of the groom and exercise rider of a Stakes winner.
My jocks would write checks for anywhere from $100 to $250 for each.
If we won a VERY big stakes. Like when Martin Garcia won the Big Cap on MISREMEMBERED or Joel the BC Sprint on DANCING IN SILKS we would throw a huge Fiesta for the entire barn.
This would usually cost $500 to $750. We'd always get much more than needed so neighboring barns workers could come by and enjoy.
Owners often times find a few $$$ extra for the grooms when they come by the barn to visit their horses. This can be as little as a $20 dollar bill but always means the world.
In most jurisdictions it's ok for an owner to bet on a horse for a jockey. As long as the ticket is ONLY WIN. That's a big deal that can cause problems if not adhered to.
Some jockeys will split the proceeds of those bets with their agent. Some won't.
Tyler Baze was always very meticulous and transparent with this perk. Just one of the reasons why he's class all the way.
A groom's talent and tenure goes a long way too. Long time trusted workers are rewarded with the best earning horses. They earn their way up the ranks.
John Sherriffs was extremely gracious to Mario who was ZENYATTA'S groom from the time she first came to Hollywood Park. He also had GIACOMO and TIAGO.
