I used to watch the great Dave Gall walk wintry surfaces two hours before post time, scraping and prodding with his shoes. Nowadays, any rider so engaged likely would be concerned with safety and building an argument for cancellation. But Gall had a whole other agenda. Nobody discerned or rode a bias like he did. And, ohhh, how he trusted those toes, steering boldly in the very first race to the best part of the track-even adjacent to the grandstand apron. He was never wrong.
When I tried the same thing, I merely ruined my shoes and blew bets.
