Maritime history is really my big thing. I'd suggest you check out Last Flag Down. It's the story of the Confederate raider CSS Shenandoah. The author takes a bit of liberty on his take of the crew but overall accurate without actually reading through the actual logs if the crew.
Reading history books is always interesting as there are the narrative variety and those where the author is espousing some hypothesis. The above is the former.
Ambrose's works are enjoyable. Americans At War is a fun quick read in particular.
I'll check out your Pershing documentary tonight.
