It was a long-term process that built on itself. Horses that were physically developed early and have a lot of speed over short distances (but not necessarily stamina or soundness) sold for big bucks...

Breeders Cup horses in general are usually good bet-againsts in their first race back. Even if they win, they're usually 2-5 in that tuneup race anyway so you don't lose out on much.
