Frank Robinson,RIP
 

Hall of Fame baseball player Frank Robinson, who after his storied playing career became the first black manager in major league baseball has passed away at age 83.He ranks 10th all time in home runs(586), is the only player to be MVP in both leagues (Cincinnati Reds in 1961 and Baltimore Orioles 1966) and won the Triple Crown in '66 leading the Orioles to their first World Series championship.

RIP - Here's to you, Mr. Robinson!

One of my favorite players growing up. He was often hit while batting, the way he crowded the plate. He got kneed in the head at 2nd base one year, and played a lot of that season with double vision. After his return from that concussion, he hit 9 more homers and drove in 33 to finish at 30 hr's and 93 rbi. He taught the Orioles how to win. RIP .

The two men who broke baseball color lines were each named Robinson.

Jackie as the first black major league ballplayer, and Frank, baseball's first black manager.

I loved to watch Frank play. Because the man played hard and with tremendous energy. As a matter of fact, watching Frank play in late 1960's let me know in no uncertain terms what a professional baseball player looked like. (I was still dreaming of making the majors myself but you could say Frank straightened me out. :) )

Anyway, just wanted to say this news hit me hard today. Because I'm a man with few heroes but one of them passed away today. :(

I can never forget the 1970 World Series. Reds and Orioles.

I was about 12 and even I was aware of the crappy trade that the Reds had made and watching the Orioles whip the Reds with Robinson was a beat down.

But the real killer in that series was Brooks Robinson. He batted .429 and killed the Reds pitching.

CJ's Dad called me one day when I lived in Dallas. He told me that ESPN was running an hour long program on that series late that night. We hooked up on the phone and watched it together. He had actually attended one of the games. It was great hearing his take on the series.

When I lived in Baltimore I had met Boog Powell through CJ's dad. I recall hating that guy during the series :lol:

CJ's dad and I were sitting in a restaurant once and Brooks Robinson came in, one of the first people he waved to across the room was Dennis.........:ThmbUp:

Frank Robinson was treated like royalty in Cincy after his playing days. They don't make em like that anymore.

Frank and Ted Williams were probably the best pure hitters with power ever to play. I was only 12 but distinctly remember Robinson being traded to the Orioles for Milt Pappas (an avg. pitcher at best) and two other nobodies. He and Vada Pinson were invaluable to the Reds. What were the Reds thinking? I remember Pappas well, seems every pack of cards I opened had one of him so I'd toss it. Had to be one of the worse trades ever. His importance to the Orioles was second to none.

Helluva ballplayer. Often the answer to many trivia questions. Near the end he was kind of pissy with the media. Made me like him even more......

I was a big Robby fan. I loved the way he shoved it up the Red's ass after they traded him for "being an old 30". He had the best year of his career and lead the Orioles to the World Series.
