All I mean is, if it looks too obvious that the feds are playing politics with their enforcement of the law, it can cause trouble for them (Democrats) with a very important set of midterm elections on the horizon.

Bks, unfortunately I don't think it will matter. When these leagues combine their power, they are impossible to ignore. There are no big powerful groups going to the DOJ to stop Washington and CO from their marijuana laws. That's the big difference. There is so much money and power involved with the leagues. I don't think "political sides" really matters here.

I also think you are right on the money with what constitutes "regulation." Is "indirect regulation" (regulating an entity that runs sports betting) the same as regulating sports betting and violating PASPA? It just seems like the leagues NEVER lose a case and when they bring it up in court, these judges just succumb to them.

Of course we are putting the cart before the horse. This is assuming that Christies signs it, which is a big if. And don't think that overriding his veto will be easy. I've lived in NJ my whole life and have been following the sports betting issues with NJ for years. Christie is a bully, for a lack of a better term, and fellow Republicans bow to him, even to the extent that when they back a law unananimously and Chrisitie vetoes it, they change their vote and don't vote to override.

As I said earlier, I hope I'm wrong, but if history is any indication, NJ will have to wait on the sidelines for sports betting for a long time.

Because you have to be in ownership of a casino or a racetrack in NJ to be able to operate the sports wagering. Don't forget Christie spent over $3m of NJ's taxpayers monies to get the sw on the voting ballot in 2011, you think he isn't reminded of this everyday? The state also shelled out over $260m in concessions so the Revel could open and operate, that money could have gone elsewhere but Gov C followed his desire to keep Atlantic City afloat and look what happened to the Revel! The sports wagering bill will be signed and NJ will have it.

Oh hell I would bet legally in a New York minute.

I am sure with his contacts with federal law enforcement, Christie will know whether its a go or a no go and act accordingly

It will get almost to the point of implementation, then the NFL will announce that the Jets and Giants must leave NJ if gambling is allowed and that will be the end of it.

Based on what law? SW is going to happen sooner or later.

There is a provision in the bill that Rutgers football cannot be wagered on in the state of NJ should sports wagering get a yes. The NFL cannot decide what teams can and cannot be wagered on. Neither can any other professional sports league.

I fully agree with those who say that the sports leagues will get their way.
They always do, and it borders on illegal influence over legislators.

In my mind, that's the only way the playing field will change in this country
with regard to sports betting. Someday, somehow, corruption will need to
surface. The side that presents itself as "holier than thou", and pure as driven
snow when it comes to protecting the integrity of the game and it's
young, impressionable, athletes will need to be exposed for the
money grubbers that they really are, and the lengths that they go to
in order to maintain the status quo.

There is a lot of wishful thinking going on over this and I hope I am wrong, but as I said many times before, sports betting in New Jersey is very, very, big long shot at best.
I think that this sports betting play is a phony play, and after the situation hit the wall, the play which I think is the real objective will be to get slots and casino gambling up north, like at the Meadowlands.
Jeff G. and his people did not put 100 million dollars into a racetrack to run races 2 day's a week.
This deal is already set, the only thing is how can the Gov. and his cronies save face after siding with the Atlantic City bunch.

The question is would you drive to the nearest racing establishment to wager on a single game? If you could wager by phone that is an entirely different story and one that would be a huge success.
