My ex-wife had something related to the story.

Her mother was blind from age 2. In her early 30s she developed TB and was sent from NY to Phoenix because the climate was dry. There she met an Indian, visiting Phoenix from a NM reservation.

They fell in love. Her family disowned her, so they decided to head to Los Angeles.

He had a bicycle and road it with her sitting on the handle bars all the way.

They went through Death Valley but it was May instead of deep summer.

The end.

Epilogue: No bets that they would make it. Nobody cared.
