Are daily doubles, Pick 3's or Pick 4's vertical or horizontal bets?

I always thought that the bets within a race... win/place/show/exacta/trifecta/superfecta are horizontal bets and that the doubles, Pick 3's or Pick 4's (and Pick 5's and Pick 6's) are vertical bets.

But lately, I've heard that mixed up. Is the definition clear? What's correct?

Bob...I think you have it mixed up...or I do, Vertical is up and down, meaning a single race exacta,up and down, and horizontal means left to right ,like race 4-5-6
