Excellent article, hope to catch the documentary.
I grew up in Fairfield/Bridgeport, CT and remember skimming all the tabloids at the corner drugstore, before bringing home the Times and Herald Tribune.
The Times was indeed the "newspaper of record", not the biased liberal one it has become. It's still well written, regardless.
I followed the Herald Tribune's Erwin Grossman, a harness writer/handicapper of the first degree and hit Yonkers or Roosevelt almost nightly.
Jimmy Breslin was my favorite though I had to read him outside my home, adhering to my mother's "no tabloids" rule.
"Marvin the torch" one of his regular characters, sticks in my memory.
Those were the glory days for print news, well before we all yielded to the screen.
