The Official Saratoga 2018 Thread. Opening Day Friday July 20th

I'm not the one to build this thread but if we're gonna have a Del Mar thread we should have a Saratoga thread. Hope someone fills it up who has a more informed opinion about Saratoga than I do.

Per me D G Donk was the true Trainer champ at Saratoga for 2017 pound for pound or $ for $ per return on investment!!!

http://www.paceadvantage.com/forum/s...light=Saratoga

I’m not sure that he can repeat last years returns but if he can at least get half of that this year I would be greatful!!!

I will be keeping a sharp eye on his barn for the entire Saratoga season!!!

I will also be looking at his crop of Maidens on the Turf!!!

Tom 07-14-2018 02:39 PM

Hope they have their own timer and not bring the one up from Belmont.

I'm going to Saratoga for the first time on closing day. Will be coming down from a hotel in Vermont.

General Parking: Free!
Free every day, the general parking lots are located off Union Ave. Expect a long walk to the track and difficulty finding spots on popular race days.

What do they consider a long walk?

I figured this was a good place to put NYRA's daily track trends link. I had no idea they had this on their website until earlier, but what a fantastic and helpful resource and timesaver. Kudos to whoever came up with this idea.

That link will take you to how the track played each day last season. The recently concluded Belmont meet link is on the page as well.

I do the Track Trends.

Last year, about two weeks ahead of the meet, I read that the materials mix of Saratoga's main dirt track surface had been changed. (More clay had been added.)

Q. Does anyone know if the materials mix for the Saratoga main dirt track surface has been changed again this year? (Or is the materials mix the same as last year?)

Excerpt:

On Friday, July 20, arguably the highest-quality racing on the North American calendar will begin when the first-post starting gate opens for Saratoga Race Course’s 2018 meet, which runs for 40 days and also closes on Labor Day. Saratoga’s meet features 69 stakes races, led by the “Mid-Summer Derby,” the $1.25 million Travers Stakes on Aug. 25. Saratoga will card four graded stakes during its first two days of racing – the Grade 3 Lake George Stakes and Grade 3 Schuylerville Stakes on July 20 and the Grade 1 Diana Stakes and Grade 3 Sanford Stakes on July 21.

Both tracks will run key Breeders’ Cup Challenge Series “Win and You’re In” qualifying races during their respective meets, and NBC Sports has several "Win and You're In" Series presented by America's Best Racing broadcasts scheduled along the way, beginning on Aug. 4 at Saratoga for the $1.2 million Whitney Stakes.

In addition to the NBC telecasts, both tracks will offer comprehensive television coverage available in many markets. At Saratoga, "Saratoga Live," NYRA's flagship show presented by Claiborne Farm, will be available in 75 million households nationally through Fox Sports 2 and regionally through MSG+, Fox Sports Prime Ticket, Fox Sports San Diego, Fox Sports Ohio and the Altitude Sports Network.

Beginning on July 21, “Saratoga Live” will be broadcast nearly every day of the meet, which runs from Wednesday to Monday, from 4 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. ET. The show features a broadcast team that includes host Greg Wolf, handicapper Andy Serling, analysts Paul Lo Duca and Gabby Gaudet, paddock analyst Maggie Wolfendale, and trainer Tom Amoss.

Saratoga may survive the capitalists that are trying to kill it. how much can u charge for a dish of macaroni????

A nice feature that I hope they will continue is the handicapping seminar on Saturdays hosted by Pete Fornatale in the big tent where they have the local vendors. In the last couple of years they've had Jonathan Kinchen and Paul Matties, among others. Great opinions by these handicappers, and it is always interesting to hear how they analyze a race.

Too bad they cancelled the Music Festival that they've been staging for the last 30 years. It was something that made the opening(and closing) weekend special. Lame excuse they gave for it too.
