Chicago Teach Strike

Not a pathetic enough display from the Wisconsin bunch leaving school to go and protest Walker, now we've got these ninnies.

Avg Salary: $76K/yr Offered 16% increase. No dice.

STTTTTTRIKE!

15% of 9th graders can properly read/write.

Somebody cue mostobtuse for his child labor, ra-ra Union routine #16.

I believe they are also striking because of new laws that will force teachers to be evaluated. Do they really make $76,000 a year? And did they really turn down a 4% raise per year for the next 4 years?

bigmack 09-10-2012 11:23 PM

45% dropout, most of the kids are dumber than a box of rocks and they have the AUDACITY to want to evaluate teachers?

How DARE they?

HUSKER55 09-10-2012 11:39 PM

give it time, online high schools are going to make a killing. What is the per child rate in Chicago.

Striker 09-11-2012 12:00 AM

That $76k average doesn't factor in their benefits either. My mom has been a teacher in the north suburbs of Chicago for over 25 years and doesn't make anywhere close to that.

Here's the teachers pay schedule, annual pay is a function of:

base salary
subject
teachers attained educational level
years of service

Remember almost 5 years of college before you ever see a paycheck.

Looks like starting pay is about 31k

Red, I could care less what they make.....
If the numbers mack posted are correct that ONLY 15% of 9th graders can read, WHATEVER they make is too damn much!!!!
I can see why they do not want to be tested themselves and evaluated.....
With an 85% failure rate (of ninth graders that cant read) ....someone is NOT doing their jobs!!
They should be making ZERO.......!!!

pandy 09-11-2012 06:40 AM

From what I read, the teacher's also have excellent pensions, something that very few private sector workers enjoy.

Your reasoning is wrong unless your purpose is for right wing propaganda.

Do we hold police accountable for not eliminating crime? Do we say to the police working the same neighborhoods with the 45% dropout rates, why is the crime rate higher than the suburbs? Are we planning to measure the policeman's performance by the elimination of crime? Something has to be worked out for sure. It isn't black and white, and it is not going to be easy. Scape goating on the teachers does not help the cause.

pandy 09-11-2012 06:54 AM

They're talking about the strike on Morning Joe (MSNBC), and they said that the mayor wanted to eliminate their automatic pay raises and have pay raises based on performance. Gee, sounds like every job I've ever had, but of course not good enough for union workers. And they did turn down a 16% (over 4 years) pay raise, which is shocking, especially during these tough times.

Tom 09-11-2012 07:27 AM

39% of the Chicago teachers sent their kids to private schools.
Two things come to mind:

1. They think THEIR schools suck
2. They can afford private schools. How bad can it be there?

Only one problem with your point. Police are held accountable for crime rates. Everywhere. He is not scape goating anyone. He is using facts applicable to every other job in the country to form a valid conclusion. Teachers unions are the worst thing to happen to public education.

These are the same people Who demand tenure and use union money to pay for Occupy Wall Street.

ArlJim78 09-11-2012 08:22 AM

this is exhibit A as to why there should not be any public service unions.
this is the 21st century, you don't need a union to get treated fairly by a municipality, and taxpayers for too long have funded this crap.
Chicago teachers have the highest average salary in the nation before benefits, and they've got some great benefits too like 10 months of full salary if you are laid off, their average salary is $76,000 whereas the average Chicago family makes $46,000. On top of that its a radical political organization first and foremost, in bed with communists, anarchists, and the occupy groups. obviously, based on performance outcomes, education is not their big thing.

So bad that they make the sacrifice so that their kids don't have to go there. :bang:
