Turf Handicapping
 

Has anyone come across any good books on the subject? I think that Quinn's chapter in Figure Handicapping has been the best.

Cary Fotias had a pretty good chapter in his book Blinkers Off.

I've not read this one but the review sounds promising, although the Amazon reviews are not too complementary. Its part of DRF's Elements of Handicapping series.

I have not read this yet, but it looks worth the time. It's an article called "The Inside Track on Woodbine Turf Racing" by Ellis Star, who writes the daily analysis at Woodbine. In a brief glance at it, I see that he goes into some detail on how different the inner and outer turf tracks are at Woodbine.

Is that book part of a system? I started to look at it and see phrases like "turf pace low" and "turf decline line" and have no idea what he is saying.

Fotias produced/sold his own figs, so yes Clocker, some terms may not make sense by reading only that chapter. I assumed the OP would try to find the book if he was interested. (I didn't know that the chapter was available online.) It's been a very long time since I read it, but there were a couple of good ideas about turf races iirc.

Thanks for the info. I figured that's what it was. I checked the book on Amazon, and it has a number of very good reviews, and about the same number of really bad reviews. I'm going to pass on that one.

Why would Turf handicapping be any different than normal handicapping?

If there are too many unknowns......pass the race!!

Everything else is what all is going to see anyway....breeding , trainer , jockey

If your going to take a shot ....get good odds

Back in the day I made a nice amount of money playing against 'cappers with this kind of thinking. And by "back in the day" I mean before published Tomlinson's and before the public caught on to late pace being critical on the turf. (I created tables using the techniques in Quinn's Figure Handicapping book.)

Now people have caught on and like other types of races it's much harder to profit from turf. Not everyone has all the answers, Mike, so maybe there's an idea from a book that someone can use to help eke out a couple of extra points in W%. And not even you are silly enough to treat all types of races the same. You're not, right? ;)
