Time to Be an Adult (Fast)

My unmarried 21-year-old daughter (a junior in college on a full-ride scholarship) is apparently due to make me a grandfather next June.

I'll spare you the details, but this was totally unplanned (on my part, at least).

She'll be juggling a lot of balls (personal, academic, legal, professional, financial, and who knows how many others) for several years to come.

My girlfriend was in a similiar situation when she was in college but with her Mom's love and support, she and her twins made it through just fine. It was rough but ok in the end. Just do the same with your daughter and grandchild.

My wife and I experienced a similar situation about a year and a half ago...............long story short, we now enjoy "the little guy" known as the apple of our eye!

Sometimes in life, we don't get to choose the time and the place but everything seems to happen for a reason when all is said and done. I wouldn't change a thiing.

Congratulations on becoming a Grandfather, especially if it is the first time.

I have some young relatives who are looking for a free ride on a scholarship when they get college age, do you mind talking about how she was able to procure one of these coveted gems?

Overlay,

From your post I am not entirely sure whether we should be offering congratulations or condolences.

I have both for you. Take your pick, my friend.

Congratulations!
You will be given a "chosen soul." They pick us.
They are the greatest! I know.

She applied for and received a Robert Noyce scholarship, which I believe is a nationwide program (http://nsfnoyce.org) for students majoring in math or science. In her case, the scholarship covers her college costs, but obligates her to maintain certain minimum academic standards, and also, for each of the three years of scholarship assistance that she will receive, to commit to two years of teaching (for a total of six years) secondary-level math in a designated "high-need" school district (where there are not enough math teachers, or where math was not the primary field of study for those who are teaching it) after graduation.

Thanks for the reply, appreciate it.

LOVE, LOVE, LOVE - grandchildren are gifts from God- how lucky you are.
I saw you on TV on Jeopardy or something like that. You did well.
But you looked like an "old fart" for your age.
This gift is the best thing that will happen to you! You'll be rejuvenated.

Since my last post, my daughter had learned that she had, in fact, conceived twins, but, sadly, both have now resulted in miscarriages. My wife and I will be leaving for Oklahoma on Thursday to be with her for a few days.

So sorry for your loss, Overlay.

Wish there something more I could say or do....:(

Dave Schwartz 12-24-2012 06:19 PM

Tim, I am so sorry for your loss.

Greyfox 12-24-2012 06:22 PM

Sorry to hear the loss.

Have a good trip, and a Happy Christmas season.

Enjoy the NHL talent that is currently on the Oklahoma Barons while the NHL lockout is in place.
