Cop Killing Sparks Immigration Debate
Police Chief Blames Federal Government for Officer's Death

Sept. 25, 2006 — The shooting of a Houston police officer has sparked a new battle over immigration.

Juan Leonardo Quintero, an illegal immigrant, has been charged with killing a Houston police officer last week after a routine traffic stop.

Police Chief Harold Hurtt blamed the federal government for failing to secure U.S. borders.

Quintero allegedly shot Officer Rodney Johnson four times in the head while in handcuffs in the back seat of his patrol car.

Johnson arrested Quintero during a routine traffic stop for speeding but apparently missed the suspect's gun in a pat-down search.

Following the shooting, a video showed Houston police officers pulling open the back doors of Johnson's patrol car and yanking the suspect out of the back seat.

"It's very easy to make a mistake. I am not saying a mistake was made," one Houston police officer said. "Unfortunately, we are in the business where a mistake can kill you."

The suspect should not have been in the United States.

Quintero was deported in 2004 after a conviction for indecency with a child.

2 arrested in hit-run crash that killed Cobb deputy

A Cobb County sheriff’s deputy was killed in a hit-and-run wreck while driving to work early Sunday morning.

Police later arrested two men, charging one with felony vehicular homicide and the other with falsely telling police that the car they were in had been stolen.

Deputy Loren Lilly, 41, was headed south on Powder Springs Road near Baltimore Place about 5:40 a.m. when his green Honda Civic collided with another car that had veered from its lane, Marietta police said.

Lilly’s car overturned several times, and he was killed at the scene, said Officer Casey Camp.

The two men in the second car, a white Ford Taurus, ran away before police arrived.

Both men were later arrested.

Along with a vehicular homicide charge, the driver, Joel Camacho Perea, 27, of Marietta faces charges of hit and run, failure to maintain lane and driving without a license.

The passenger, Maurilio Herrera, 23, was charged with a misdemeanor count of falsely reporting a crime to police, Camp said.

Lilly, of Marietta, had worked for the sheriff’s department since 1989 and was assigned to the jail division.

Cobb Sheriff Neil Warren said in a news release that it was a “tragic accident,” and he described Lilly as a “fine deputy.”

Camp said that the Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency has placed a hold on the two men, who were being held Sunday night at Cobb County Jail.

Also, Mexico does have a death penalty so they fight to stop any of their citizens from getting the death penalty here. They have not always been sucessful but it costs you and me alot more money while they go through their appeals.

As odd as this may sound, illegal immigration (and, yes, there is such a thing) is only the tip of the iceberg in terms of our immigration woes.
