Beto

Right now as I post this, it's about 3:10 pm eastern on Monday March 18, 2019.

Here's a look at the articles about Beto currently running at REUTERS, Fox, The New York Times, and CNN --

Special Report: Beto O'Rourke's secret membership in a legendary hacking group:
https://www.reuters.com/article/us-u...-idUSKCN1QW26N

Quote:

SAN FRANCISCO(Reuters) - Some things you might know about Beto O’Rourke, the former Texas congressman who just entered the race for president:

* The Democratic contender raised a record amount for a U.S. Senate race in 2018 and almost beat the incumbent in a Republican stronghold, without hiding his support for gun control and Black Lives Matter protests on the football field.

* When he was younger, he was arrested on drunk-driving charges and played in a punk band. Now 46, he still skateboards.

* The charismatic politician with the Kennedy smile is liberal on some issues and libertarian on others, which could allow him to cross the country’s political divide.

One thing you didn’t know: While a teenager, O’Rourke acknowledged in an exclusive interview, he belonged to the oldest group of computer hackers in U.S. history.

Members of the hugely influential Cult of the Dead Cow, jokingly named after an abandoned Texas slaughterhouse, have protected his secret for decades, reluctant to compromise his political viability.

Now, in a series of interviews, CDC members have acknowledged O’Rourke as one of their own. In all, more than a dozen members of the group agreed to be named for the first time in a book about the hacking group by this reporter that is scheduled to be published in June by Public Affairs. O’Rourke was interviewed early in his run for the Senate.

O’Rourke’s membership in the group – notorious for releasing tools that allowed ordinary people to hack computers running Microsoft’s Windows, and also known for inventing the word “hacktivism” to describe human-rights-driven security work – could explain his approach to politics better than anything on his resume. His background in hacking circles has repeatedly informed his strategy as he explored and subverted established procedures in technology, the media and government.

“There’s just this profound value in being able to be apart from the system and look at it critically and have fun while you’re doing it,” O’Rourke said. “I think of the Cult of the Dead Cow as a great example of that.”

An ex-hacker running for national office would have been unimaginable just a few years ago. But that was before two national elections sent people from other nontraditional backgrounds to the White House and Congress, many of them vowing to blow up the status quo.

Reuters reporter takes heat for sitting on Beto O’Rourke hacker story until after Senate race against Cruz:
https://www.foxnews.com/politics/reu...ainst-ted-cruz

Quote:

Reuters is facing ethical questions after admitting that reporter Joseph Menn sat on an unfavorable story about media darling Beto O’Rourke until after his crucial Senate race against Ted Cruz.

Reuters published its report Friday on the “Cult of the Dead Cow,” a famous group of hackers credited with inventing the term “hacktivism,” and revealed that now-2020 presidential candidate O'Rourke was a member. The group is responsible for a variety of shady activity like stealing credit card numbers to pay for long-distance telephone service, violating copyright laws and hacking into computers, according to the report, which stressed that O'Rourke himself never "engaged in the edgiest sorts of hacking activity."

Beto O’Rourke Raised $6.1 Million Online in First 24 Hours of Campaign:
https://www.nytimes.com/2019/03/18/u...ndraising.html

Quote:

WASHINGTON — Beto O’Rourke raised more than $6 million online in the first 24 hours after announcing his presidential campaign last week, according to his campaign, outpacing his rivals for the Democratic nomination and making an emphatic statement about his grass-roots financial strength.

Mr. O’Rourke brought in $6,136,736 after declaring his long-anticipated bid with a web video and trip to Iowa on Thursday morning, raising the sum entirely online and from all 50 states, the campaign said.

He narrowly beat the first-day haul of Senator Bernie Sanders of Vermont, who raised $5.9 million after announcing his bid last month and who would go on to raise $10 million before his first week was over.

Beto O'Rourke raised massive $6.1 million his first day in the 2020 race, campaign says:
https://www.cnn.com/2019/03/18/polit...ord/index.html

Quote:

(CNN) Beto O'Rourke raised $6.1 million in the first 24 hours of his presidential campaign, his campaign said Monday, in what amounts to the largest announced first-day haul of any 2020 Democratic contender to date.
The former Texas congressman raised $6,136,763 in online donations from all 50 states in the first day, his campaign said. That tops the $5.9 million one-day total Sen. Bernie Sanders announced after he launched his campaign. The closest other 2020 Democratic candidate to publicize their first-day fundraising total was California Sen. Kamala Harris at $1.5 million.
The first-day total shows O'Rourke has the potential to recreate the record-smashing fundraising prowess he exhibited during his 2018 US Senate campaign.

Imo, the points of view expressed in the above articles are a sad reflection of how polarized we've become.

My impressions:

Reuters goes out of their way to make him look cool, uses the phrase "legendary hacking group" in their headline, the phrase "The charismatic politician with the Kennedy smile" as one of their bullet points, and doesn't actually write about his activities as a hacker until you get well into the article.

Fox leads with a headline that says "Reuters reporter takes heat for sitting on Beto O’Rourke hacker story until after Senate race against Cruz."

The New York Times seems to be gushing about how much money he's raised - and makes no mention of his hacking activity at all.

Ditto for CNN.

He is probably the Dem frontrunner, the beautiful people seem to be behind him like the were for BO1. We'll see what happens.

Tom 03-18-2019 04:00 PM

CNN and NYT are branches of the DNC.
What did you expect...REAL news?

elysiantraveller 03-18-2019 04:05 PM

I said it somewhere else today but the Dem 2020 will include, in some way, either Beto or Kamala or both...

Tom 03-18-2019 04:08 PM

Doing what, hiding ballots on election night?
Scouring the Obits and signing up dem voters?

Greyfox 03-18-2019 04:11 PM

I'm convinced Beto is a marionette. Look at his movements of arms, torso, and legs.

MargieRose 03-18-2019 04:36 PM

What happened to all of the 70+ million that he raised for his Senate run? Did he spend it all...70+ million on just a Senate race?

Are his type of supporters so stupid that they keep sending him more?

The guy IS a farcical clown!

reckless 03-18-2019 04:56 PM

Town drunk, tooth fairy and skate board maven, Bobby Franny (Beeee-toe) O'Rourke, the Democrats' Great White Dope ... and, Kamala (The Ugandan Giant) Harris, who slept her way to the top of Nob Hill, are being hailed on here as being major 2020 players. My god, unbelievable.

In due time, they too will be relegated to comedic foot-note status as will the other 15 or so Democrat grifters.

As long as these 'rock stars' continue to get all this free media, the country will eventually realize how shallow and stupid Beee-toe and Kamala truly are.

I just cannot believe anyone on here thinks Beee-toe is even a major player on the US political stage. The Town Drunk couldn't even defeat the most hated Republican in the Senate, Ted Cruz, in the middle of a big, Democrat Blue Wave, no less.

The democrats need to get out the black vote. I'm not confident either of these candidates will.

chadk66 03-18-2019 08:16 PM

he has no chance. hell he couldn't even beat Ted Cruz

Californians and New Yorkers were not supposed to vote in that election.

His ability to raise that much money shows how much people
HATE Ted Cruz
not how much they
LOVE Beto O'Rourke.
