4/8/17: G1 Carter - Aqueduct
Yeah, yeah, I know NYRA, you are all amped up to hear my thoughts on this race.
This 7F beauty has crowned some greats. Morning Line, Congaree, Artax.
But 2017 it is, and here is the field:
:1: All Star Red: Nice horse, but can't beat a number of these at 6F. Hasn't beat anybody at 7.
:2: Tommy Macho: Flat out Money Burner that is now going back in distance from his normal mile to 7F. Maybe a good change for his deep closing style, but certainly don't love anything about hit 7/2 ML odds.
:3: Sassicaia: Favored over a couple in here last out at 6F. His Toboggan back in January was good, but was it that good? And he'll need that to win among this field.
:4: Awesome Banner: 4YO switches trainers in here and has ran consecutive bullets. Not a big fan of the barn move, and hasn't done much at this level.
:5: King Kranz: Has never really ever beat anybody, but should be a solid exotics play.
:6: Spartiatis: Couldn't beat the 5 last out stepping up in class. As a 7YO, can he get better?
:7: Green Gratto: He'll get to the front. Can he get 7Fs? Not likely.
:8: Unified: 5 career races, and if he doesn't have the lead at the 2nd call he won't win. Gotta respect a horse who beat Mind Your Biscuits last out. The horse to beat.
:9: Ocean Knight: At one point in time, this was big time Kentucky Derby contender. He is now 5, always overbet, and in a race he should have no business in winning.
SUMMARY: I'll be the dumb money and play the :9:. Rest of the field interests me as much as Barry Manilow's greatest hits.

I always come up with some seriously whacky lines in these big races...here's another one:
:7: Green Gratto 6/5
:4: Awesome Banner 7/1
God help us all.

Ha!
This is a really really weird field. Pretty much why I picked it. 9 horses and not a one you feel confident about.

Obviously not confident in Gratto getting the distance...but...at a big price he's worth the risk IMO...

I like how you think, when many horses in a race have faced off one or more times before, look elsewhere. Now I have to look at the PP's.

I like the :6::8: here.
LIKE the 6 A LOT.
FEAR the 8.
This is a G3, not a G1.
LDH, Yes, the 6 has grown into his body in his 6 & 7 year old season. One of those late bloomers.

I'm reversing your top two: 4-7-8.

I had published :8::6::2: on my site. For public selection purposes it was hard not to put Unified on top, but Spartiatis ran a big one on the Tom Fool, and he has run decently on the main. I think he'll show well at 7F. At the odds he's probably the win bet. The other horse that I wonder about is Sassicaia. He doesn't look quite as fast as the top two, but he could sneak into the verticals. I'll probably make a sub-prime bet to win on Spartiatis and a healthy :8::6: exacta.

Agreed :headbanger:

Nice race.....for a Gr 3.
Agree, Unified the one to beat. He won A gR2, he has only 1 off race, he just tied his 3yo top and looks ready to move ahead, 100-105 maybe?
Only one other horse going to run in that range - maybe. Tommy Macho. Close behind are King Kranz, 3rd off the bench, and Sassicaia.
:8: / :2::3::5:
:2::3::5: / :8:
And a flier box on :2::3::5: for beer money.

Surely there will be an inquiry, but how did GG go off at 54/1? :eek:
:2: Tommy Macho was the best today. Will they DQ both the :7: and :8:?
