Obviously I wasn't in the slain teen's crew, and the following are general statements.
are there racist cops? sure
was this a racist cop? Probably not.
Most of these extreme-force incidents from police occur because of the way the system is leveraged, not because of some racial vendetta.
The system is leveraged to be as efficient as possible.
It would be a lot more expensive and less efficient to have a high level of accountability, more rules, more training, more rigid admission process etc...
Am I calling for a change in the system? Not necessarily. A start would be acknowledging the reality of the system on some level.
Are blacks subject to a higher risk? Sure. There is fear, there is perceived risk.
If you are a large black male (or even a large white male), you need be aware of the stress and risk involved and go out of your way to demonstrate cooperation.
There seems to be a lack of awareness by the public about the way our police system works.
You see people calling the police because their kid is "out of control", or you see people getting into conflicts with the police.
Most of the time things go smoothly, but when excessive force is used there seems to be a big surprise. (or in this case a blame of 'racism').
