Three claims voided in the same race at the great race place

The claims of Kentan Road, Tizanillusion and Powder were voided by track stewards in the hour after Sunday's second race.

Tizanillusion won the race for fillies and mares at 5 1-2 furlongs and was claimed in a three-way shake by trainer Doug O'Neill for $32,000. She returns to John Sadler after being reported as unsound after the race, stewards said.

Powder, who finished second, was claimed for $28,000 in a five-way shake by John Martin, but will be returned to Genaro Vallejo. She was reported to have bled.

Kentan Road, who finished fourth, was claimed for $32,000 by Gary Sherlock and returns to Sadler because of unsoundness.

How convenient this seems.

Curious... do the claimants have an opportunity to take the horse if they want it?

Believe so.

Yes. It’s completely their call to take the horse or not, else it’d be a really problematic rule.

So now what happens?
Does this horse go on the vet's list?
Is it banned from running for some period of time?

That seemed logical but wanted to hear it.

Thank you.

Wasn't always that way.

Can someone please explain what unsound or soundness means in horses? Also how is it determined so fast ?

Determined by the state vet on duty. Different vets can have opposing opinions on soundness or the degree of unsoundness.

Is this a change? I remember a horse kept running and winning in SoCal that was getting claimed but the vet was voiding it. The claiming trainer didn't seem to have a choice in the matter as they seemed to want the horse but couldn't have it.

From CHRB:

(b) The stewards shall void the claim and return the horse to the original owner if: (1) The horse suffers a fatality during the running of the race or dies or is euthanized before leaving the track, or (2) The racing or official veterinarian determines the horse will be placed on the Veterinarian's List as bled, unsound or lame before the horse is released to the successful claimant. (A) Bled is defined as the racing or official veterinarian observing a horse bleeding from one or both nostrils during or after the race, and determining that such bleeding is a direct result of exercise induced pulmonary hemorrhage. (c) The stewards shall not void the claim if, prior to the race in which the horse is claimed, the claimant elects to claim the horse regardless of whether the racing or official veterinarian determines the horse will be placed on the Veterinarian's List as unsound or lame.

Am i reading this right?

Sadler took first and third with horses determined to be unsound?

Are they automatically put on the Vet's List in these cases?

it is not very common for a horse to return to the grandstand to be unsaddled and be lame enough for the track vet to see his/her lameness. I'm thinking they must be able to reject these horses while they're in the test barn or shortly after at their own barn. There must be a certain period of time post race that these horses can be assessed.

Page 3 shows the protocol - the claimed horse is sent to the receiving barn after racing and then the examination takes place ...
