Canterbury Park does this every year.

Small fields all year, then closing weekend 12-14 horses in many races.

It's like the trainers woke up Monday morning and said, "Golly, we better run our horses Friday and Saturday since it's all over for this year."

At least they get to dust off the 14 horse gate.

Their condition book does include how the purse would be divided in a 13- or 14-horse field.

I’ve been watching their races pretty closely this year. The racing secretary has no idea what he has for horses in the barn area

Nothing unique to Canterbury. At any meet where people have to ship a long way to their next spot, every horse that can run will get entered if they aren't being held for a specific race at the next destination.

It's also why you see a few long priced winners in the last couple of weeks of a meet. One of the best betting angles I ever saw was playing any long priced horse that Tom Greer rode in the last two weeks at Ak-Sar-Ben. He was always good for several $60+ winners, and often had one pay over $100.

There is a term for it called "getting shipping money" ... :)

I only worked in the racing office at Canterbury for Doug Schoepf (1995-2000). He was great at writing to the horses on the backside, and we consistently had one of the higher field sizes in the country at the time. He was a great boss, and we had a great staff of officials. Did two tours at Canterbury, and it's still one of my favorite tracks.

Saturday just over One million dollars.


I made win bets in 7 of the 14 races, won 4 and won a few exotics and made $170 on a very chalky day.


One race an odds on 1-9 won a stakes race, in another, a 1-5 lost a MN maiden special race.

I did not play the mandatory pay out pick 5 because I felt any horse could win race 12 and 14.

Saturday was the rubber match of whether I'd have a winning or losing year at my home track.

For the year betting Canterbury, I was + $85.55

If you think any horse could win race 12&14, wouldn’t that be the best time to use the all button OR just go deep on longshots that have a chance?

I was the colors man at Ak-Sar-Ben for several years in the early 80's ... :)

I played a little bit at Canterbury this season, I thought it was a pretty good product. I wish the takeout was still low as I would play it even more.
