An officer does not salute someone of lower rank. The person of lower rank salutes them and the officer returns the salute. The marines standing guard at that entryway did not salute Biden and they were not supposed to.

The CO of my basic training company explained saluting to us. It was right after they showed us how to clean our muskets. He said, “You salute me to show respect for me and my rank. I return your salute you to show respect for you. It is equally as important for me to return your salute as it is for you to make it in the first place.”

That’s how I learned it. Maybe CJ or someone else who served can tell me I am wrong.
