Historical BLURRING

Its funny how history becomes "OUT OF FOCUS" over time...The great horse Eclipse is credited with 18 wins in the time of 1769-70...If you look CLOSER, however, a full EIGHT of the these were "walkovers!'

The TRUTH changes one's perspective of a lot of things.

"After 17 months of racing, Eclipse was retired to stud due to lack of competition — no one was willing to bet on his rival horses"...

Yes, all the truth can change, but also solidify one's understanding of history.

I don’t know about that . The truth is when people figure out they have no chance they avoid the best . People were questioning why Life Is Good went to the Classic. That’s what happens when it appears unwinable. Some races back then were 3 and 4 miles long (heats). It was said he won some by a furlong or more . Oh, they line up to race you when you win like that. This horse ran over 60 miles in races . He pretty much ran further in a day than some of these modern day horses run in a career. You can quibble but it’s not that blurry to me . I guess they used to say…. Eclipse in front , the rest no where. And they didn’t come out of the woodwork to challenge him . Who would ?

Nailed it.

The more the 21st century is dominated by smart devices and social media, the more there is a collective longing for the mid-late 1700s.

A little farther. Descartes was rejecting the common sense view of man by 1637.

Things haven't changed that much. I wanted as much as anyone for Flightline to run as a 5-year old, but it's fair to wonder who the heck would be willing to run against him. Those probably would have been some pretty sorry fields. This is a rare sport where it's considered better to not compete at all, than it is to lose.
