Is cord cutting a-political enough to be interesting?

Just thinking what stick or box is better to stream and be able to save content for a different day. Also talk about a VPN and ways to stop internet throttling.

If you care at all about picture quality the apple TV 4k is a furlong ahead

If your going to stream you really don't need to save content. It's on demand. The faster your internet the better the experience.

I have tried most and in fact have a few Amazon sticks -upstairs.

A Roku in the master bedroom. Hardly ever watch in bed

Primary TV has an Apple 4k TV internet down is in the 380 area and it looks incredible on an LG Top of the line 4k TV at 65 inches

PaceAdvantage 04-17-2021 01:55 PM

I use Nvidia shield...and also the built in apps in my TV....

OntheRail 04-17-2021 02:01 PM

Cut few years back. Use a Ruko to feed the TV only added feature is Philio for under 15 a month. Have not missed cable bill or any program thanks to Video On Demand. Now my internet is not the best out in the sticks claim up to 10meg most times when I check it's between 5 -7 been as low as 3 even at that speed the video quality was better then what we got from cable. I can't wait for that infrastructure money to hit and they run fiber our way...

Anyway cut the cord... you'll be happy with whatever gadget you pick to feed your TV. If not you'll get a sweetheart deal as a new customer going back.... for awhile then wham bill goes up.

I find the apps on my TV suffer because the wifi in my TV is only half as good as the Apple TV. The TV max down is about 180

This causes a little buffering and 4k content is not as good

I'm using YouTube TV right off the internet, nothing else. Got a ton of stuff saved to my library and have no issues at all.

PaceAdvantage 04-17-2021 03:52 PM

The only bad thing about YouTube TV is that they DO NOT STREAM in DOLBY 5.0.

THEY ONLY STREAM IN STEREO!!!!

It's 2021 boys...what is the ****ING PROBLEM?

Other than that, it's the bee's knees...whatever that is.

PaceAdvantage 04-17-2021 03:54 PM

I should clarify, literally NONE of the online streaming services stream in Dolby 5.0, save one (I think it's AT&T or maybe it's DirectTV...can't remember)...

I find this astonishing. Almost like this is the concession they gave to the cable TV giants...what possible reason could they have for not streaming in DD5.0?

Cable has been broadcasting in DD5.0 for decades now...so has over-the-air TV...

Just switched to Fubotv because they havent dropped the local sports networks like some others. Works great and also includes TVG. If you are going to stream I strongly recommend the RTN $15 a month plan for all thoroughbred tracks and replays. Only notable stations missing from Fubo are CNN and the turner networks. I see that as a benefit.
Love being able to customize the guides on the streaming services. Can move MSNBC and all the other garbage channels to the bottom so you never see them. Youtube tv actually lets you remove them.

I am also using YouTube TV after learning about it in a separate thread. I was paying for Xfinity at one home and Spectrum at another. Losing those broadcast TV fees and being down to one less expensive provider is saving me lots. I have, in the past, tried to cut cable totally, but found it to be too difficult for my wife to manage. I also have subscriptions to a few apps; ESPN+ for UFC, Disney+, Netflix and Discovery+. We also have Amazon Prime so we get that. There is definitely room for reduction, but we are going to stick with this for a while.

Apple TV offers other people's content via their app, right?

Does that mean if I get a stream from (say) NetFlix but watch it via Apple the quality improves?

(We actually have the Apple physical device already but opted to not pay for the subscription because it does not include much content that we don't already have.)

My intent is finding the balance of what is available content free with the device plus a high end antenna for local channels in HD. And spending more time in casino race books as this Covid-19 nightmare winds down. I am ready to cut the cord, just need to learn a few new tricks first.

Just between us I am a bit of a horse racing junkie who will want to save races.
Some time back when I was a whole lot younger and first started up with the wife, we hung out at Rockingham Parks clubhouse in the back free section with Trainer Ralph Politano's brother and others. So I learned to read the form like a trainer but also how to watch races like one to. Specifically to understand when a horse has run its last race and its tank is empty next out and will need a few even if it looks good on paper. When you combine that in addition to knowing moves specific trainers do it is worth it.

On a different note I have scooped media at Goodwill By The Pound, thousands of CD & DVD original legal content. So my AV room has two large bookcases loaded. The Pound you can have all the CD/DVD you can stand for $1.49 a pound, I filled up a half size spindle the other day about a buck. Computer cables or anything electronic is only .20 cents a pound, the media I discard plastic cases instead of paying the weight.

Via the Apple TV box ; yes just install the appropriate app from the app store.

The video is far above the rest if you have a capable TV

I plain love it.

So if you wanted to record a race in TVG2 does it go to your cloud account only or can you save in mpeg to any device for offline later? Also pure cord cutters who will stream will find most cable company's are throttling, so recording eliminates some of the buffering BS

PaceAdvantage 04-26-2021 04:44 PM

I don't even bother paying for TVG anymore via YouTubeTV (it's extra).

I used to pay for it when I had cable.

I find I can get by just fine using online video on my PC.

If I record on YouTubeTV it just stores it on the DVR portion of my account. It has nothing to do with the Shield.
