Dropped Whip?
 

No problem. Saturday (2/10/18) in race 4 at Oaklawn Park David Cabrera dropped his whip at the top of the stretch. He quickly found a suitable substitute in a pair of goggles. I have never seen that before that I've noticed. Check out this replay...

That is fairly common in that situation, seen it many times over the years.

I lost that race, but didn't notice that. Cabrera brings in a lot of winners

Never noticed it during live action but I did note, for the first time this weekend, "lost whip" in the comments section of the PPS (Race 2 and TBD on Sunday 2/18).

I was looking for angles to see if I could find reasonable value against the 1-1 favorite Hazit. I liked the 2 horse, the other Todd Pletcher horse in the race, and from Calumet Farm. His last race out he finished 5th by less than 2 lengths but had a comment that his rider lost his whip. Never saw that before so I watched the replay and his jock dropped the whip coming around the near turn into home. Was hand "whipping" the horse all the way in but got passed by a bunch before the finish.

That was enough for me to take a shot but Earth couldn't overcome the class in the race first time on the dirt and finished third. I think it could be an interesting angle to identify somewhat hidden bad trips depending on when in the race the whip was lost.

It should be noted that it is a violation of the rules, but the penalty is only a small fine, especially compared to the winning jock's fee.

I see on the ACRI rulings he was fined $200. I guess goggles hurt more than whips.

Jose Santos won the BC Turf on Manila, outfinishing Theatrical, asfter dropping his whip.

Long standing rule that has been a 200 fine forever it seems.

Depending on the horse, whips are waaaay overrated.

Truly they are typically good for about 2-3 hits on each side. Other than that, for the vast majority of horses, all the other stuff is for show or in many jocks case, a lack of talent.

In general, I totally agree.

Capot won the 1949 Belmont because of Ted Atkinson's whip, and Holy Bull won the 1994 Travers due to Mike Smith's.

But usually, the rider asks the horse to run and maybe taps them twice and from then on they are going as fast as they can.
