Grants Pass Downs Race 11

Watching right now scary situation, the lights turned off during the final race of the meet.

Yikes. Do you know what the handle was for the Pick 5 with mandatory payout and carryover? I made my first Grants Pass bets last night (eliminated well before the 11th).

lights on track go out 3 seconds into a 3 turn 6.5 f race

2 of first 3 horses by clubhouse first time were riderless

You can't make this stuff up

It gets worse.

Going into last night's card their single jackpot pick5 had a $51k carryover.

About $250k of new handle was bet into their single jackpot pick5 pool because yesterday was closing day for their 2021 season and they had announced there would be a mandatory payout.

As it so happened:

The race where the lights went out was the last leg of their single jackpot pick5.

They were forced to declare the last race an 'ALL' for purposes of paying out their single jackpot pick5.

Five of five ended up paying about $377 for $0.50 because of the 'ALL' in the last leg.

Peanuts (for some players) compared to what they stood to collect had the lights stayed on for another minute and a half.

Correction/Update to my above post

The actual pick5 payout for last night's R11 at Grants Pass Downs was $357.75 for $0.50.

Last night's pick5 pool amount shown in the tote data: $314,088.

The feed I was watching left the viewers in the dark. It just said the race was declared a no contest.

This article has video of the race embedded at the bottom, which includes Jason Beem's exasperated call about the lights going out.

The total paid out was the same and for most players the bet became a winner if their live horses did not win.

I agree that some players that went really deep probably lost and did not return the cost of their bet.

From the article at The Paulick Report:

Quote:

How and why the lights went off isn't clear, but the speculation is they were set on a timer to go off at approximately 10:30 p.m. and were not adjusted after the switch from daylight savings to standard time on the morning of Nov. 7.

The nine-race program on Monday, Nov. 8, ended with the final event going at 9:21 p.m. Tuesday's finale was off at 10:28 p.m.
If that turns out to be true... Ugh.

I'm surprised there were no horses hurt. I guess their natural instincts kicked in once the lights turned off suddenly and they bucked their rider.

most horses have better night vision than their jockeys

The timer explanation re: Daylight Savings does not make sense to me because the new 10:30 p.m. was the old 11:30 p.m. So if nothing was adjusted there would have been more time before the lights went out, not less time.

Maybe it wasn't necessarily daylight savings but perhaps the 11 race card was unique? Looks like most of their previous cards were 9 races ending at around 9:20pm. Once the 11th race started just shy of 10:30 perhaps they had not accounted for that change with the lighting timer?

sharkey11 11-13-2021 11:20 AM

well isnt that some ones job to account for that.:puke: lax is what it is just another way track employees chit on the paying patrons
