Sad news, RIP Harvey Pack
 

A little before my time as a horse player, but I've read his book and heard a lot of people speak very fondly of him.
The video of him and Pete Axthelm catching the subway to the Breeders Cup is fantastic.

A legend in New York racing.

Another good one gone...RIP

Everybody needs to throw a program today.

I was a salesman and always made sure I made it home to see the recap show.


Also got to see some Siros seminars. Andy,(TLG) what an interview. First time I have seen it and it brings out the true Harvey Pack.



RIP Harvey....You really make me miss the days of live racing and the characters that abounded.

Very sad news. Harvey was an icon. I loved his 45 minute show on the old Sports Channel....when had guests.

And of course, at Siro's with Andy....

He was as much a symbol of New York racing as the canoe at Saratoga or the Secretariat statue.

RIP.

I cannot tell you how pissed off I was when NYRA pushed him aside. He was a horseplayer through and through, one of us, and he didn't treat us like depraved addicts.

I was only a kid when I first starting watching the recap show, but I will tell you I never missed an episode if I could help it. He had insights to share, and he was always entertaining. I liked Frank Wright and Charlsie Cantey on the old OTB show, but they were horse folks first. Harvey was a different breed.

RIP Harvey, they just don't make them like you any more.

When cable came to our neighborhood here in the mid-west, it carried New York racing's replay show, hosted by Harvey Pack, which I watched faithfully, and became a fan.

When I would get to Saratoga, attending his replay show out in the backyard was a big part of my Saratoga experience. A group of us would stand around the fence watching him at a distance. Invariably, he would walk over to the fence and chat briefly with us before "going home to be with his grandkids." For Harvey this wasn't an easy task. Harvey had what could be called a "disability" which made walking difficult for him, so we all appreciated his making the effort to stop by and say Hi.

NYRA actually fired him at one point, which Harvey said was to go in a different direction - Down. He always called over-bet favorites, especially firsters, the "fastest horse in the world." When obscure numbers would combine for a trifecta, Pack would say, "Its the old 13-9-11." The man was a natural.

For me, Harvey Pack will always be New York racing!!!

As many have already said there was a time when 'his' replay show was our only lifeline to NY racing. Upstate we never had anything like the racing channel you all had down in the capital district for instance. Harvey brought a lot of flair to the show and had on some really big name handicappers. Prayers go out to his family and friends. He was certainly a part of the fabric of NY racing that will always be remembered.

Harvey pack, I followed him religiously in the late 70,s spent all my Saturday’s at aqueduct and Belmont. Pack at the track. RIP.

I too enjoyed his show and often seen him at the track.......

The one motto I got from him and still use " Don't bet a favorite doing something for the first time"...
