California's uncertain 2014 racing calendar topic of emergency meeting

The board of directors of the Thoroughbred Owners of California has scheduled an emergency meeting at Santa Anita on Thursday to discuss the uncertainty surrounding the 2014 racing schedule and future stabling issues at Southern California tracks.

Some proposals for a 2014 racing schedule would have the Santa Anita winter-spring meeting running through mid-June, instead of its customary closure on the third weekend of April. Del Mar, which runs a seven-week summer meeting, could seek a fall meeting, and has stated a desire to host a Breeders’ Cup meeting at that time of the year in the future.

Addressing a write-in question from horseplayer advocate Andy Asaro, Pegram said there is no chance of reducing the owner’s takeout from bets because the money is used to increase purses to attract bigger fields, more horses. He said SB 1072 raised the takeout on two- and three-horse wagers. “That helped raise purses by $20 million in the last two years,” Pegram said. “That’s a 17 percent increase over the previous year." He said losing that money would cripple Southern California racing and destroy Northern California racing.

The TOC made a mess of it and now they're suffering the consequences. If racing in CA does not eventually die, I'll be surprised.

In order for California Horse Racing go back to top and compete with New York, Florida, Kentucky and etc.

We need to start building Casinos at the Racetrack! Just like everybody else!!

Turn SA into PARX. A brilliant plan.
By the way in case you have noticed shippers from S. Cal have been doing very well when shipped East since SA went back to dirt. The ones that have found their way to AQU this winter and spring have rewarded the people who bet on them very well. S.Cal based horses dominated the Triple Crown race last year in case you didn't notice.

So, the TOC maintains it's "Screw the fans and the future, let get ours now while we still can" attitude. How narrow minded. Does that mean that the hugely popular 14% Pick 5 will become a thing of the past?

Would appear that Los Al is out and Pomona is in on the expansion issue, but Fairplex is also iffy, and may just settle for a pair of additional short meets in June and November. Am not keen on Del Mar racing into the fall. This was tried many years ago, and it was a huge flop. Of course this was before simulcasting and Otb, but even so, DMR is a summer resort area, and on track crowds and revenues from admissions, parking, and concessions would be sharply reduced, perhaps to only half or at best, two thirds of the summer numbers.

Barretts Racing at Fairplex is making plans to open its barn area for year-round training next January, but is unlikely to expand its racetrack beyond the current five-eighth-mile configuration in the near future, the company's president, Jim Henwood, said on Thursday.

Barretts Racing, located on the Los Angeles County fairgrounds in Pomona, Calif., had previously proposed a $20 million expansion that would include expanding its main track to six furlongs and the development of a five-furlong turf course on its infield. "There is not enough time," Henwood said.
