Glad to hear about the lion. Maybe the Penn National Poker Room will re-open sometime this century.

January activity is in the books, and things are much worse than last reported.
One session ended up being my worst loss in my entire 8+ history of playing Texas Holdem. Subject session included the following:

--- 4 times when I flopped a set, I ended up having a 2-1 advantage after the turn and going all-in. Villains sucked out on me each time. If I did the math correctly, this will happen about 1.2% (or 1 out of every 100 occurences.).
--- I had AKo, Villain had As3s. Flop comes A4s8s. As short stack I go all in. Villain turns a spade to make a flush and another spade comes on the river just to rub it in. Hands like my lose 47% of the time, so essentially losing a coin flip here.
--- Someone raises to $12 pre-flop and their are 5 callers including me. I have Ac9c. Flop comes A 9 3. I go all in and get one caller who has either a backdoor straight or flush draw, which gets there.
--- Villain raises $15 preflop, and when it gets to me, I go all-in with about $70. I have QQ and loose to AA. This simply happens from time to time, but included it because it was a part of the horrible session.

My very next session was a loosing one as well. I played relatively breakeven after the following:

--- I have KK and flop a set. Flop is K Q 4 rainbow. I go all in for about for my remaining $125. Villain has T9s. I am a 2-1 favorite, but villain gets a J on the turn. I now still have 33% equity to get a full house, which does not come. And to make matters worse, I get teased in a later hand when I get AA pre-flop, with a flop of A Q x, and a turn of Q. Even though I don't expect it to hold, I have a High Hand of AAAQQ with about 40 minutes to go. The High Hand pays $400 per hour, but since no one had a qualifying hand the hour before, the roll-over of $400 made this one worth $800. With 17 minutes remaining I hear the dreaded "High Hand, Table X, JJJJ with an 8. :pout:

Trying to get it all back quickly is a recipe for disaster. My challenge will be to grind away over the next 2-3 months, hopefully playing smart and getting a bit of favorable variance, to make up the current to-date losses.

In answer to your playing questions regarding playing conditions, tables have a maximum of 8 players, there are no dividers, and masks are NOT required, even by the dealers. I would estimate that about 90% of the dealers wear masks, and 15-20% of the players do. High Hand promotions are typically $300/$400 per hour, and run about 7-8 hours each day the room is open. The room is open 9 a.m. to 3 or 4 am. Wednesday thru Sundays, and closed Mondays and Tuesdays. Each day can be a little different, and because there are still not as many dealers as there were pre-covid, one has to plan wisely in order to not have to wait several hours before getting on a table.

Sheesh, the other losses are ones we all see if we play enough but this one would have had me on tilt! Did the guy have a J 8 to start? If so, Grrrr!!
Hopefully you will remember that the future is unwritten and soon you will see your biggest plus day ever.

Thanks for all the support and words of encouragement.

February is now in the books. The good news is that I am back to basically even, recouping the January loses. The not so good news is that most of the profits made were not from the pure playing of poker, but from the High Hand promotions. After not having any high hands in January and about half of February, I found myself hitting 3 of them in about a two-week period! I am definitely not complaining, but obviously I want much more of any profitability to be the result of playing well vs. the "luck" of getting a High Hand.

Speaking of High Hands, one of the recently mentioned ones came at what was basically my first day of play ever at the MGM National Harbor Casino in Oxon Hill, MD. I had just dropped off some Church friends at the Regan Airport, and realized that MGM was less than 20 minutes away, so naturally I had to make a visit there! I had ATo and flopped top two pair, then rivered and Ace to get on the board. I had to sweat about 15 minutes (currently about 15 other tables going), and fortunately held. Yay!! High hands would be $200 from 12:15 p.m. and later. My hand hit in the morning so it was worth $500. Double Yay!!!

My initial buy-in was $200, and I had pocket Aces against a very loose player. (MGM has the reputation of a lot of loose, crazy, and wild players.). The villain called my preflop raise of $25 from the Cutoff position with K2o. The flop was x x 2. I bet $45 and he called. The turn was a K, and I led out for $65, to which he re-raised. I had less than $50 left so I called, and was not not able to counterfeit him on the river. I bought back in for another $200, and later had AKo. I was surprised to get back some of it by value-betting a weak player when the flop had an Ace, and he called three streets of bets with A3o. I ended up losing only $95, which allowed me to keep most of my HH winnings. MGM is a nice and appealing playing environment, but the huge negative for me is that driving each way is 91 miles (About 1hr-40min under normal traffic) and about $25 roundtrip in gas.

Back at Charles Town two days later I had AQs where I flopped top two pair, but did not get called on a river bet when another Queen appeared. I did not show my opponent my hand, because High Hands need to be a full house with a minimum of Aces over 2's. About 15 minutes later I hear a HH announced: JJJKK. Then I suddenly realized that Wednesdays/Thursdays are Super High Hands meaning the minimum qualifying hand is a full house of Jacks over 2's. Crap!!!! I spent the next 20 minutes hoping my QQQAA would get beat, but the intercom was unfortunately quiet. Making matters worse, there was no HH the previous hour so the $300 from that period rolled over into the current hour making the payout $600. :bang: File this under the "We all do dumb things". I have been so blessed, so perhaps this is just a bump along the way of my poker participations.

Now on to March activity which will hopefully have me playing well/smart and generating some profits the way we a supposed to, which is from the mistakes of our opponents.

Nice honest recap TC.....Lots of Promos during March Madness Month....

Don't forget that those promo dollars come from the rake so you're getting your own money back. High hands typically come from strong starting hands so don't ever feel bad taking the payout.

hopefully march came in like a lion and out like the lion! ;)

a connecticut wankee in king trooper's court? (part 1)

clearly hollywood penn national is an aesthetically pleasing racino both inside and out, but just as clearly all that glitters ain't gold, a fact i'm reminded of when rebate shop xxx calls to let me know that our friends in grantville have imposed another "source market fee," dropping my rebate by yyy. as if it's really any of their business where i bet two dollar omnis on sha tin?

today i just roll my eyes at this pathetic mitt joint but my good friend the lion, KING of the pen poker jungle, roars his disapproval at their inability to reopen a simple poker room at what's supposed to be their flagship property.

indeed the lion has had enough and tells me of plans for a big atlantic city trip where he plans to reel in every fish in the marina and is even training his wife to play!! i listen patiently as he shares the details of her education; all the way down to how she'll play pocket 8s vs an early position raise.

i tell the lion i'm less concerned about the lioness 3 betting old men coffee who haven't played a hand in four orbits than i am about how she'll react to some of the absolutely abhorrent behavior that takes place in these poker rooms. but he turns a deaf ear to my suggestion that she dip her toe in the shallow waters of a more humble 2/4 game just to gain some experience.

a connecticut wankee in king trooper's court? (part 2)

an extreme example of the kind of filth that can be found slithering around these card rooms is shown in this latest "trooper97" video titled "what an internet troll really is."

for several episodes, trooper strings us along about something called #voicemailgate, before finally waiting a day and releasing the above video detailing how he's being stalked by someone supposedly known as las vegas nightcrawler.

trooper tells us of a time in the past where lv nightcrawler was kicked out of caesars poker room for an unspeakable act while simultaneously being on trooper's radar for suspicious behavior. next, trooper learns lv nightcrawler is a tier 3 sex offender in the state of connecticut and implores caesars to ban him from the poker room permanently..... which they apparently do.

opinions vary widely in the comments section. an "aaron s" says a "tough acting" trooper would be "knocked out on the spot" by lv nightcrawler, while "joseph s" claims that authorities will never find lv nightcrawler if anything ever happens to trooper, adding "that's not a threat....it's a promise!"

certainly such bravado would equally apply to trooper's girlfriend, lady trooper, who would probably only qualify for plain jane status to the bondesque renaissance men of this website but would likely change the world of your average poker man who thinks trooper outkicked his coverage.

in the end the only real advice i can offer the lioness is to wash her hands after handling the chips.

the lion agrees.

the lion rolling

ok poker fans we are BACK with our first trip report of 2022!!

today's action starts with me and my amazing girlfriend estrella loading the car for another ride to america's playground ATLANTIC CITY where we will have a short two night stay at the beautiful ocean resort and casino towards the north end of the famous boardwalk!!

along the way we pass hollywood penn national and the new hollywood morgantown but they don't deserve our action so we don't stop in. we hear from our good friend the lion who jokes that he was going to call hollywood pen and see if they could recommend a good room for live poker! :D

by the time we arrive the lion has already been in atlantic city for several days and it's been business as usual as he's resumed his winning ways, already going 3-0 at harrah's. his wife, the lioness, also planned to try a game and does. she loses $60 but has a great time and everything seems great as he moves his tack over to wyndham skyline tower near the boardwalk. (it is about a block behind resorts)

estrella and i opt to stay inside the ocean for the night and tell the lions we'll meet them tomorrow afternoon at the exciting tropicana to get my 2022 poker action rolling!!

thank you for reading!

no tenemos dinero!!!

ok poker fans we are back in exciting ATLANTIC CITY for day number two of our adventure where we wake up at the beautiful OCEAN resort and casino!!

after a small breakfast estrella and i begin walking down the boardwalk towards the tropicana to kickoff my 2022 poker campaign. hopefully we can get in a game with pen great THE LION to get a front row view of his play!!

walking down the boardwalk i make a rule: we only speak spanish on this boardwalk!!! when the eight people between ocean and tropicana ask us for a dollar we say:

"lo siento. no tenemos dinero porque hemos perdido nuestro dinero en el casino." :(

this works great and we arrive at tropicana without being overly harrassed!

i start the season in a brand new 1/2 no limit contest and of course THE LION is nowhere to be found.

with AA i get no action but spring out to an early lead when 33 flops a set and rivers a boat on a board that ends up Q 3 6 8 Q. i raise the river here and get called but immediately sense i made a rusty mistake by not raising more..... a move which comes back to haunt me as i end up missing several flush draws and fall behind. finally with a suited JT i turn a flush but an action killing card hits the river, cutting my rally short.

i lose $84 over several lionless hours, note my ring rust, and cash out.

fortunately estrella has won (again) in the casino and is controlling the players card. maybe tropicana will give us a room in the future?

back up the boardwalk we meet up with the lion family at resorts and find that my worst nightmares have come true (see last week's trooper series). apparently last night there was a big game at tropicana? the lion ultimately prevails to go 4-0 on the trip by dragging a $650 pot or something but the lioness is watching the game and is completely turned off by a lot of the behavior. despite the great time she had at harrah's, she now wants to abandon the game.

here is some footage:

Hey proximity, great to hear you are back in action, and posting your interesting stories on the poker forum. It just happens that today was a very unusual poker day for me.

It started on the felt at Maryland Live. They were running $400 High Hands every 15 minutes, which later switched to $599 every 20 minutes. Here are some of the "highlights":

--- I get AA and raise pre-flop. Two callers. Board is 2 7 5 rainbow. I bet out $25 and get one caller. He has 79o and turns a 9.
--- I end up with 2 pair, AT, but villain's pocket 66 found a third one on the flop.
--- I go all-in pre-flop with KK. Villain has 44 and catches a third one one flop.
--- I have AQs and bet $10 pre-flop. A not-so-good player raises to $90. I jam all-in figuring worst likely scenario is KK (but not AA because I have a blocker) where I have 30% equity. He turns over K9o (which a Texas Holdem Calculator has me as a 2-1 favorite). I flop a Q but he turns a K, so bye bye to that buy-in.

There were a few other hands that I think I got it in good, but the variance went against me in those as well. Overall I left MDL down $600.

I decided to drown my troubles by going to the CT (Charles Town) poker room on the way back home to see if I could get back a little of the afternoon losses. They first told me to go to table 8, but I was watching the Preakness race on one of the monitors. As I headed to table 8, they then said to go to table 1.

My very first hand was 99, and the flop included another one. Could the tide be changing that soon? Someone else lead out with a small $15 bet and I smooth-called. The turn was a blank with another $15 lead-out bet and a call by me. The river paired an existing Q on the board. The previous aggressor checked, and folded when I bet $60. I am now up about $100, with only $500 more to go, or would my short-term gain disappear later with my earlier day's "luck". I later get KK and win after calling a lady's $57 all-in pre-flop. Another hand somewhere I had AQo and ended up flopping 2 pair and winning. Then I got AA and shoved all-in after someone raised to $13 and 3 others called. No callers, including a looser player with a large stack.

Then around 9:20 p.m. or so I get 99 again. I think someone bet $10 and I called. The flop came QJ9 rainbow and the fellow who bet $10 pre-flop bets $40. I go all-in ($300+) and he calls (with about $225). If he already has the straight, I have about a 33% chance to turn/river the full house. If he has a higher 3 of a kind, I am crushed with only having a 1-outer and probably heading home very depressed. The turn is a brick and the river is the last 9!!! All that worry for nothing though, as he only flopped top two pair, where I was good the whole way. High hands end at 9:00 p.m. on Saturdays, but it was in sudden death overtime because no one had a qualifying hand during the 8:00-9:00 p.m. period. The HH was only a lowly $200 (minus $20 dealer tip), but it does add to the bankroll.

Shortly after 10:00 p.m. I decided to bank my great fortunes of the evening and quit. Interestingly though, just a minutes before that someone (who was not particularly a strong player) did go all-in pre-flop for about $65 but I decided to fold like everyone else, despite having pocket Jacks. A +$130 day sure looks great when compared to -$600 or even worse. :)

By the way I am leaving for a solo racing trip to New Mexico in a few days to get in SunRay Park and Ruidoso on my visit list. While there I plan to play poker a few times at the Sandia Resort and Casino in Albuquerque. :jump:

Track Collector 05-23-2022 02:03 PM

Played again on Sunday at CT.

Three particular hands:
--- I have 9s10s and the flop comes 7s8sKs and I am in position. Villain has 78o and bets $35 and I go all-in for my remaining $100. Turn is a blank and river is of course a 7. If I jam after the flop, maybe he folds, but in general we should make more money betting for value when we believe we are ahead.
--- An older gentleman who seems a bit on the weak side limps in for $2 UTG, I think there is another limper or two, and I happily check my BB option with 2d4d. The flop is 2h4h7h. UTG bets $5 and I am the only caller. The river is another 4. UTG bets $35 and I call, as I have a strong feeling he has the nut flush. River is an A and he bets out $50. I re-raise all-in for about $125 more and he calls. He does indeed have the Ah, but also another A. :bang: In hindsight I believe that with almost 100% certainty that he still calls my all-in if I jam on the turner. The hits seem to get better, so after being rivered with the previously 4-outer, I now get rivered with a 2-outer. (Yes, we also benefit from hitting 4 and 2-outers, but that seems like it has not happened in my favor for a long time.) :bang:
--- A player who has only been at the table for about 30 minutes and currently on the CO raises to $7 pre-flop. I call with Ah7h as well as another 2 players. The flop comes 2h8h10h. The CO bets $35 and I call. The turn is an action killing Qh, or so I think. CO leads out $50 and I jam for the rest of rest of my chips. He thinks for about 2 minutes and says I think you have the Ah, but you could be bluffing. He calls with QhJh and an open-ended straight flush draw. Also under consideration is that there is a $300 High Hand promotion where the current hour was ticking down and which he would be virtually 100% to win if he hits. My current bad variance run is about to bite me again with another 2-outer. The river is a blank and I win! Yay!!!

Along the session I was down two $200 buy-ins and stayed with one more $100 bullet. This last hand rallied me to about -$100 for the day. Like most people I was temped to play on, trying to get back to even. I lost about $30 more with AKo on the button, when I folded to a new player's lead out bet of $35 again a flop of A34 rainbow, turn of a 7, and a river of a 5. With her calling my $10 pre-flop raise, so many BB hands can beat me. I played about another 15 minutes, and after getting back to -$100 for the day, I happily decided the rally was more like a winning session so home I went.

This bad variance run of the past 4-6 weeks will certainly turn the other way, but it is more likely to ebb back my way rather than getting hot the next few weeks. Even the players who are superior to me in talent have to experience these longer streaks of play where the deck seems to constantly be hitting one over the head. There are no guarantees so future bad variance could continue or get EVEN WORSE over the next few weeks and months. Bad variance is often accompanied by impatience and increased bad play, so special efforts need to taken to guard against these which cause bankrolls to shrink even more than they would with better play during bad variance.

As indicated in previous posts, winning High Hands continue to be my friend and keep my YTD efforts in the black, albeit barely now.
