West Virginia Derby

We are making our first trip to Mountaineer Park, specifically to watch the West Virginia Derby.

I've heard good things about this big day of racing.

This year's card starts off with a non-winners of two (3yo and up) allowance for fillies and mares, follows with seven straight stakes races, and closes with a non-winners of two (3yo and up) allowance for open company.

Mr. Money should take the WV Derby, but... there's always a chance he might not show up, at least if my wager is riding on his back. He certainly let me down in the Risen Star (won by War of Will) and the LA Derby (won by By My Standards). Maybe my bet won't jinx him this time.

Along the way, there should be some decent opportunities to make some money. I mean, I haven't done my handicapping yet, but just looking at the entries, I see some runners that draw my attention.

For instance, Abiding Star (ml 6/1) is going in the 2nd race, and I've always kind of liked that horse.

I will also take a close look at Peru (ml 8/1) and Dark Artist (ml 8/1) in the 5th, Uno Mas Modelo (ml 10/1) in the 6th, and Sir Anthony (ml 5/1) in the 7th. I'm crazy about Sir Anthony. He's one of my "crack" horses.

Imperative will run his final race in the 7th. It would be a great surprise to me if he runs well, but I would love to see him go out strong. Realistically, his retirement race will probably look much like Soi Phet's finale; still, I'm going to enjoy watching this guy run.

Some really fine jocks to watch, too, given that most of the "elite" will be riding at the boutique summer meets at DMR and SAR. I enjoy watching these great athletes ply their craft. Among the bigger names of Geroux, Saez, Lanerie, Bravo, Quinones, Cohen, etc., is that of Miguel Mena, and I like watching this man ride. Loves loves loves me some Miggy Mena! He's going to be on Hawaakom in the 7th, and that horse runs well under Mena; again, as I've said, I haven't handicapped yet, but at first glance, I like Hawaakom to get a piece of the action at 15/1 or more.

In case you're interested in viewing the full list of runners, jockeys and trainers, here's an Equibase link to entries: http://www.equibase.com/static/entry...19USA-EQB.html

We'll be driving north, I guess up I-77.

I've never been closer to New Cumberland, WV, where the track is located, than Pittsburgh, PA, and the couple occasions I visited Pittsburgh, I flew in.

This time, we're driving. Want to see some rivers and mountains and visit a county fair or two. Maybe find a local show, listen to some live music, taste the roadfood. I hear the pepperoni rolls and slaw dogs are good.

Although my main goal is to see the track and enjoy the racing, I would appreciate any sightseeing recommendations some of you might know about. This might well be my first and only visit to "almost heaven."

If you’re afraid of tunnels, take another route. Coming from the Carolina’s? 77 used to have a toll section too.....but it’s scenic

I always look forward to this race.
I wish they would leave it at night, where it is not swallowed up by Toga and the Hambletonian.

there is the "Big Tea Pot" at end of the town of Chester Wva. The casino is nice at MNR. there is slots at the track and table games at the main casino. Pittsburgh is 45 min away

Thanks much for the recommendations :)

The crab feast, casino, and everything else sound amazing!

P.S. I guess we won’t get to see Imperative after all, since his connections have decided to let him bow out at Toga.

Imperative is also listed at Saratoga in the Whitney on Saturday. Anybody know which one he'll actually run? His ML is 30/1 for both, but I hope he outruns his odds.

Imperative scratched from our race...

Looks like a really good betting race.

I have to dig deeper, but at first-glance, looks like some decent prices could contend.

Entire card, especially the gov, and with exception of derby, was brutal to make ML on..and I do wish in derby i had gone perhaps a tick higher on plus que parfait...considered even-money on the fave, and made assmusen single digits......................overall, though, i'm pleased with the odds, and feel no significant buyer's remorse...........nagging feeling, however, that K patterson's rep has for first time spread beyond these shores and, along with the fat BSF, will attract considerably more support than i baked into sparticle's (rbt c byrd) price-point

I go every year. Its a good day and mnr does a good job with it. You'll have a good time. Great day of racing without the headaches of big day crowds, lines, expenses and bs

Afleet 08-03-2019 01:11 PM

million scratches-will kill handle. That really hurts tracks like MNR on their big day.
