Loggins

Loggins the 2 year old Ghostzapper colt trained by Brad Cox keeps looking better and better as horses come out of the Breeder’s Futurity. IMO he was best that day and it has been a productive race so far. I’m looking forward to seeing him again next year. He could a very very good.

The horses that have won out of there (aside from the horse Loggins failed to beat) have won what appear to be slow races. There were faster races (raw times) on the each of the days those horses (Two Phil's, Powerful, Instant Coffee) won.

His maiden win also produced 3 winners thus far, although 2 of those were in maiden claimers.

If we are talking Derby, Ghostzapper hasn't sired a serious Derby contender unless you count McCraken, who turned out to be a second-tier horse. His Grade 1 winners on the main track have all been marginal at best (in fact they nearly all were longshots when winning their Grade 1s); Stately Victor won a polytrack Blue Grass and nothing else, Moreno was essentially a bridesmaid, Shaman Ghost couldn't get near Arrogate or Gun Runner, Mystic Guide won perhaps the worst Dubai WC ever (that's saying something), and Nucky ended his career in an $8k. Great sire of female sprinters, though.

In general, like the horse himself, his offspring don't seem to hold up physically (and broodmare sire Blame has a similar profile).

Sure enough, Loggins has not recorded a workout since the Breeder's Futurity and was conspicuously absent from the BC. The trainer reported that the horse was "tired" and they were skipping the race to give him the best chance to win the Derby. Maybe they believe in the Juvenile Jinx or its just a whole lot of trainerspeak...

The also rans in the race aren’t running very fast but a number of them that got totally buried in that field have run faster or at least run back to their best form afterwards. There have been 4 wins and 2 seconds directly out of it. So it wasn’t chopped liver the top 2 were around 7 lengths in front of. And again, IMO Loggins was better than Forte than day and Forte won the Juvenile.

I took skipping the BC Juvenile as a positive. It sounded like they know they have a very talented horse that could be Derby factor and they didn’t want to push him into 3 races in a short period and potentially ruin him. I didn’t read anything about injuries. So he’s probably galloping somewhere getting ready to start working next month. There’s not much point to working now when the targets are quite bit away.

It could be legit. But Cox's detailed reasoning about running 3 races in a short period rings hollow in the face of his handling of dual champion Essential Quality who basically did (with great success) what is apparently now anathema to him.

Meanwhile, owner Spendthrift loves to "make" stallions which Loggins would have been instantly if he had contested and won the BC Juvenile.

None of this of course means that even if he did have a setback, it was something major.

He is very promising, but I lik Messina better.

Loggins' best work is obviously the Caddyshack soundtrack but nevertheless, you're breaking the law:

Loggins still not in training at this stage but even worse news...he's been at the Black Hole known as WinStar Farm this whole time.

Good thing this news made print a week before the latest Kentucky Derby Future Pool...

Safe to say he is in the Danger Zone of missing the Derby.

I've heard of that highway.

Unless he's training somewhere else and is ready to breeze soon, it's going to be a problem. I didn't read anything at all.

Search for an article "Cox Unveils Plans for 3-Year-Old Colts".

Unfortunately, TDN doesn't allow one to copy & paste their articles nor attach links to those articles, either.

I presume TDN is worried that they would reach a wider audience if they allowed such free distribution of their "content".

Perhaps the most damning piece of information about the horse is that Cox is "undecided" on Loggins' next race which may simply be because Cox has so many other 3yos to choose from, but then again the original plan was to skip the BC to point for the Derby. You'd think they'd have mapped out a specific plan to get him there...

the little guy 01-16-2023 08:24 PM

Doesn't this horse have a bit of a funny way of going?

Tom 01-16-2023 08:39 PM

He does have angry eyes for a horse.
