Ricardo Santana Jr.

When you stop riding your horse when you shouldn't........you should be suspended.
Silver State deserved better.

I'd like to hear his excuse for that finish. Yikes!

He never stopped riding him.

He was obviously reserving his energy for the big payoff.

If Asmussen is in attendance - you could have just watched the walk back to the jocks' room. If there was an issue with the ride on Silver State - Asmussen would have NO issue with letting Ricardo know it. I have seen it numerous times at Oaklawn post race. (Often followed by a hearty congratulations when he wins on an Asmussen runner shortly thereafter.)

Silver State was drifting in through the stretch. Santana switched to the left hand trying to keep him straight. SS kept drifting. Santana wasn’t as vigorous in his hand ride for just a couple of strides very late as part of trying to keep him straight and then started pumping harder again when he realized he was about to lose, but it was way too late. It cost him the race. It may have been a no win situation though. If he continued urging as hard, he probably would have won, but it’s possible there would have been contact and a DQ. IMO he thought he had won, rode safely, and lost. Hard to fault him too much, but that was a wicked beat. It looked over.

He blamed the horse......I kid you not.
Even Matt/Britney who were on the air @TVG commented on the Santana early shutdown.

To me the winner looked almost awkward early and was just the better horse plain and simple.

Well, Silver State completely blew the break and was badly out of position. Hard to argue he wasn't best.

Santana called the loss a “heartbreaker.”

“He passed the other horse easy, and as soon as he touched the lead, I don’t know if he saw something or what, but he pulled himself up,” Santana said of Silver State, who earlier this year won the Grade 1 Metropolitan Handicap at Belmont.

You need to learn the ways of the message board, when a horse wins its the rider, when the horse loses its the rider.

I am not competent with how to physically ride a racehorse and Santana is one of the best.

It's remotely possible that there was accidental miscommunication with the horse.

The most likely explanation, and the simple explanation, is that Silver State simply 'hung' after making a long drive and then getting the lead.

Correct.

Watch his ears! Race horses are pack animals. Often times no matter how good when they become clear they think the game is over and say let's wait for my friends. He slowed down so noticeably that Santana actually looked off balance for a few strides.

Steve trains his horses in close company to try to avoid just such an occurrence. But sometimes there's nothing you can do. When a 1000 lb animal decides he's going to slow down there's NOTHING the jock can do about it.

Saying Ricardo did something wrong and or nefarious is complete nonsense.

Winning horse races is hard. One way to win. About a million ways to lose.

:puke: to anybody who had him singled.

Feel for ya.
