I have a question for people who wager on thoroughbred racing and don't typically wager on harness racing.

There is a form of standardbred racing called monté (also known as Racing Under Saddle). The basic rules of harness racing remains with regards to maintaining the trotting or pacing gait as well as breaking, but instead of sulkys and drivers, there are riders who race the horses on their back.

If I could ask you a favor? Would you kindly watch the first three minutes or so of the video below which shows a monté race in Sweden which is longer than a mile. My question is, if you don't typically wager on harness racing, if this type of racing was conducted in the United States, would you be interested in wagering on these types of races?

With the particular race being shown, it is a long race; at least 2,700 miles, or 1 1/2 miles+. In the United States, it would likely be one mile races which would likely be less than 2:00 minutes. I suspect the long race is what made it seem camel-like. I just took a race randomly as a sample.

Yes, the breaking rule would still be in place.

The riders tend to ride higher than they do in thoroughbred racing because the trotting gait is not particularly comfortable to be sitting in the sulky.

As a FYI, these types of races are extremely popular in France. Over there you have some horses who one week will race with a sulky and the next time like the video; we are talking about top stakes horses as well.

I am just trying to see if these races would gain some interest from thoroughbred players as you don't have the issue of getting boxed in and can race in tight quarters like thoroughbreds (don't need to worry about the width of the sulky).

I saw this type of racing live in Mons, Belgium. A few of the races on the card were that style. I didn't particularly care for it, and it didn't seem as popular.

I probably wouldn't bet on the sport, but I doubt I am indicative of what more casual gamblers would do.

I love it...and would wager on it enthusiastically.

The sulkies add too much to the chaos factor in harness racing...and this turns away too many potential fans from the sport.

But I would need past performances with more than six lines per horse... :)

Honestly, I wouldn't be interested in wagering on those races. I guess I'm used to watching the Thoroughbreds and their style of running, and also, I like to see them coming out of the gate. By the way, I had never seen a race like the one shown in the video. Thanks for sharing.

In 2005 Jag de Belouett pulled off the double, winning the Prix Cornulier and the Prix d'Amerique (richest harness race in Europe) in the same year.
