Department of Labor: Asmussen 'willfully' underpaying staf

Robert Fischer 06-23-2019 12:55 PM

If I had a longer life-span, I'd get myself a stock-market mentor...

time to find another hobby?

Are the feds 'open game' taking a cut for themselves now, or is this the same old, same old?

AltonKelsey 06-23-2019 01:20 PM

Asmussen's "typical" weekly pay for a hot walker with four horse in his or her care was $462 in 2018. Grooms with that many horses were earning $662.75 weekly base pay last year, per the Department of Labor.

Groom = over 33,000 a year

I guess Groom is a 50k a year job, then + bonus

Isn't 50k per annum the minimum wage now ?

Racing needs to understand they are not above the laws.
NO ONE.

If you can't afford to run your stable, get out of the business.

Most of my dish guys are from the Work Release program. Sheriff drops em off and picks em up. They live in a half way house.
Some make and some don't...have a few guys who have moved up to grill and other positions after their release.
Others went right back to jail

The economics of racing are horrible as is and apparently likely to get worse.

It must be a great comfort for your customers to know that their food is being prepared and cooked by convicts who are on a work-release program.

Read closely....I said some of them move up to other positions AFTER their release.
Frankly, it's NONE OF MY CUSTOMERS BUSINESS what type of background my staff has. If you've EVER eaten at a restaurant in your life chances are that the person who made your food is a user of illegal drugs and most likely has a criminal record.
Consider that FACT before you go out to eat again

PaceAdvantage 06-23-2019 05:33 PM

Maybe they ought to start looking into restaurant staff in addition to backstretch worker pay....:p

Be careful what you wish for....

AltonKelsey 06-23-2019 06:18 PM

look, if you cant afford to pay a groom 100k a year, you shouldn't be in the biz

I was alluding to your comment that the sheriff drops off and then picks up your employees at your place of business....and I was picturing what I as a customer would think if I saw such a spectacle. Having eaten at a restaurant once or twice in my life...I can testify that such a witnessing might temper my enthusiasm about patronizing such an eating establishment. But then again...maybe this puts me in the minority. If I offended you in any way...please accept my sincere apology
