Meanwhile, at Western Fair

Just now caught wind of this one which was raced on Weds night. How would you like the to be the guy expecting to see your exacta come back at around $ 400 -$500 and see that payoff. Tri and super came back legit so maybe one late exacta punch snuck though the system? Regardless, one of the biggest stinks I have have sniffed ever.

hey Ray,
Sensationalism by both the writer and the publication editor.
The press blames the industry for perils, all the while promoting this BS in their publications.
WFR a small track by today's standards, (and even forty years ago) is struggling for its life. The Racino is about to be relocated after two year negotiations and the fear is that racing will be lost entirely for this only major venue in Eastern Ontario (it's been in all the trade news), and yet sensationalism.
I've not watched or played WFR in a long while. Visited there a few decades ago. They do NOT race 8-wide, rather (if my memory is correct) seven and a trailer.
WFR has always had (even decades ago) strange payoffs in the exotics.
Keep in mind this was a 4k pool, not like they broke the bank at one of the major casinos in Vegas or AC.
Guess with no real action at Yonkers and the Meadowlands on a two-day-a-week schedule that there is just nothing else for U.S. writers to 'harp on'.

BTW, there's a very active thread of this same topic (with heavy participation by the author) on FB.

Quoting Barndale's article in HRU
"If the current system allows for bets to be made until the first horse touches the wire after the gate leaves, that loop needs to be closed and betting cut off a few seconds earlier when all seven horses are still in a line so that all bettors get a fair shake no matter when they placed their bets."
I've had more than one source tell me about this.

I predict a major scandal in Harness in 2019, not drivers, not trainers, tote people.

Ray,
I wouldn't hold your breath waiting.
The C-band feed (minimum delay on the signal) that the Red Mile has, was explained a few years earlier in another trade magazine (this one actually publishes hard copies).

The feed that they get is the same one that the players at western fair receive. Big advantage.

If it's such a BIG advantage?
Why aren't they playing at Mohawk, The Meds or even Honk Kong?
Far larger pools in of any these than at WFR.

Hell! Miami Valley likely has larger pools than WFR.

Quote from Jaywalking by Jay Bergman, DRF Harness Weekend 2/28/19
"What needs to be examined in this and many
other like circumstances across the racing
scene is whether institutional wagering is
gaining some sort of advantage in placing
wagers in the seconds before a race goes off.
It
would seem farfetched to believe that Bombay
Hanover suddenly found a large group of
followers that sensed the 6-5 near-post time
odds were just too generous to pass up. A more
fitting explanation would be that large wager -
ing came from a single source perhaps moti-
vated in part by rebates."
Clue Number 2 Major Scandal

Muddy 03-01-2019 07:07 AM

How many times does it go unnoticed the other way with a huge overlay and people just say dam that payed good?

Ray2000 03-01-2019 07:46 AM

I don't care about big bets changing the overlays-underlays,

I just want the tote to shut down when the starter calls for the horses.!

Clue number 3

".....the possibility would exist that a player(s) with clairvoyance or impeccable timing
could box three or four horses in a $20 exacta at the last second or beyond and make a nice score.
There is no proof that anything untoward ....."
