Your Top Books On Political Philosophy?
 

Summer is almost over and all I did was slave and sweat for most of it. So looking to add a few volumes to the collection for some much welcome fall reading. Anything from any side of the aisle, modern or historical. I always thought writers like Nietzsche, Emerson, Camus, Colin Wilson, and Jung were more interesting than politics. Liked a lot of different poetry and literature in my early 20's. But mainly read non fiction(learn something new) and horse racing stuff now! In addition to some old stuff. Was thinking about nihilism the other day and started reading Camus, The Rebel(I had only read Sisyphus and other stuff). So far it gives our times some perspective in my opinion. But anyway not here to start that conversation.


What are your must reads for political thought?

Study Plato's Republic:

The Constitution.
Then Supreme Court opinions.

Declaration of Independence seems to cover all need to know about the theory of it.

The Stranger by Camus was a wild one.

Recently, started reading some Hannah Arendt, was starting with The Human Condition but now see in chronological order, which I'd prefer to do, comes The Origins of Totalitarianism. I have both, they are on my slower reading, reading where i have quiet and time to put in. I believe you can find free ebook copies.

For a quicker read and no less fantastic i just started Short History of Man by Hans Herman Hoppe. It is a history but it is oozing political philosophy. I believe a free ebook can be found on mises.org.

Fernand Braudel and anything he helped originate out of the Annals School.

He is/was a historiographer so while he doesn't espouse a philosophy he provides a very, sometimes absurd, amount of depth into the shaping of markets and people.

Bring Caffeine.

Clausewitz must be included though in your current library right?

The Prince by Machiavelli.
