cursor is flying all over the place
 

I have an Acer laptop and the cursor is flying all over the place. I'm currently writing a lil' program using Tom Brohammer's fps etc. It's difficult because sometimes the cursor flies and I type into a line that I don't want to type into. It has flown and erased material that I have typed etc.
Any ideas for a fix would be appreciated. :headbanger:

Take a damp cloth and wipe the bottom of your mouse and the surface you’re running it around on.......to discharge

Since the OP said it was a laptop, I assume he's not using a mouse. Try here...

Good to cover all bases, but a wireless mouse is a MUST when using a laptop, IMO.....Increases speed 3x, more accurate and less accidental erasures.

Does this problem occur only when you type?

If so make sure that your thumbs or any other part of your hand or sleeve is not touching the track pad (or keyboard). As a test, try typing gently with your hands/arms lifted significantly, so that they are not resting on any surface.

You could also test with an external keyboard.

In addition, the track pad might need to be cleaned.

If you never turn off your computer, try a reboot.

Furthermore, if the problem persists, you can quickly discern if the problem is hardware based or software (driver) based, by merely booting a live OS.

Try doing this:

This happened to me (parts of hand touching track pad while typing...MS Surface Book has an option that alleviates this...not sure if other laptops do as well).

I had the same problem... and it only happened with my old Acer laptop as well.

I tried a bunch of things, such as reinstalling my operating system, buying another mouse, and even d-loading Bleach Bit. Hell, it it could keep Hillary out of prison, why not ?? If Bleach Bit was good for one mouse why not my mouse too??

Bottom line, they all worked, but only temporarily.

Now, I must ask if you ever have the computer on and spend a lot of time on sites such as You Tube? I traced my cursor mouse problem to the times I was on YT for hours and hours, especially the few times I nodded off watching old horse racing shows.

I believe sites like YT or popular stops like Drudge are the villains. IMO. Try to upgrade/update your browser to the most current one for your operating system.

Maybe the touchpad is not being disabled
 

If you are using an external mouse on a laptop with a touchpad the touchpad should automatically be disabled. The simplest way to test if the touchpad is disabled is to touch it and see if the cursor moves. If the touchpad is not disabled that is your problem

Try replacing the mouse with either a new one or known good working one as a quick swap/trial. It's very possible your current mouse is on its way out. This resolved a similar problem for me about 10 years ago. Good luck. Let us know the outcome. And make sure you're using new batteries if it's wireless.

I haven't fixed the problem 100 %. What I've figured out is that if my arm or shirt sleeve brushes the touch pad, the cursor flies. So I'm learning to type with my arms higher than I'm used to.

Well, it's good that you figured it out, because that problem (along with your solution) is the last thing that would have occurred to any of us. :rolleyes:

As others here have indicated, you might try adjusting your track pad sensitivity.

Also, if you are typing for extended periods without using the track pad, you could just cover the track pad with a piece of stiff card stock or even with a thick paper napkin.

Or just find a mouse to use with the laptop and turn the touchpad off...
