2-Day Breeder's Cup?
Steve Crist suggests that the Breeder's Cup be spread over two days, 3 races Friday and 4 on Saturday.
Isn't this knid of like splitting the Superbowl over two weekends?
He sees no negatives, but then again since it might mean a tremendous increase in sales of DRF, I can see why he might think that way.
Any thoughts on this idea? will it provide more interest or just dilute the big day?

If you were going to split it, why a Friday and not a Sunday?
If it had to be a Friday, do it this way. Leave the Saturday exactly as it is. On Friday, card races for the missing divisions with the purse at half of the big BC races.
Turf Sprint
Filly Sprint
2yo Sprint
2yo Filly Sprint
Mile on Dirt for Older
Steeplechase...maybe, but who really cares
Just thinking out loud!

One more I'd love to see...$500,000 starter allowance for horses who have started for a claiming price of $5,000 or less...in the last 60 days!
BTW, when is Crist going to run that 8th Breeder's Cup race, or is he eliminating one?

No negatives...?
Well, on a Friday, without a major broadcast network covering the event and with most people at work, it seems likely the handle would dip significantly.
|
No Sunday
Sunday was thought to be bad because it would conflict with NFL football.

I'd love to see them add either a mile/1 1/16 mile race on the main track and a 4 or 4.5 furlong sprint. And I'd like to see Hawthorne get a Breeder's Cup. I have a feeling we're likely to see a 4 furlong BC race happen before they hold the event in downtown Stickney, IL.

I would love to see a 5 or 5 1/2 furlong turf sprint. I think that would be a super betting race.

How about every so often have one or two turf races in England or France? They could be the first BC races of the day at 11:00 AM and 11:45 AM Eastern time (4:00 and 4:45 PM London time).

Connections may have to fly around the country for sunday stakes elsewhere. How about 1 saturday for all female and juvie races, them the next saturday for the males and geldings? They can call the gelding races World Thoroughbred Championships and the rest Breeders' Cup races!LOL!!

Can't do that, that would make them appear too much like real World Championships.

Oh, yeah. Sorry I forgot that "world" really means North America when it comes to the Breeders Cup.

6 3/4 years later, the vision of a 2 day Breeders' Cup is a reality. Let's see what actually happened.
Turf Sprint- Yes
Filly Sprint- Yes
2yo Sprint- No
2yo filly Sprint- No
Dirt Mile- Yes
Steeplechase- No
Starter Allowance- No
4 1/2 Furlong Race- No
Instead of 4 on Friday and 4 on Saturday, we have 5 on one day and 9 on the other. Interesting to see how this panned out.
