Passed part of the house/senate in NC

I wish they would legalize sports betting in California. With my crappy internet it can be a PITA to place bets for my friend in California, some days I wish he could do his own. I strangely have to use the phone, even when tethered to
the PC the FanDuel locator can't identify the PC location, only the phone.
My battered sausage fingers do want to use a standard keyboard, not a small touch screen. I wonder what California's problem is?

It would be totally awesome if a first-class track can be built in one of these states - just like it would be awesome if Major League Baseball expands to North Carolina (presumably Charlotte) and Tennessee (either Nashville or Memphis would work).

These location checks use Wi-Fi to geolocate, I use an ethernet connection on my PC with a wireless NIC plugged in for backup and it just being on allows me to use sportsbooks from PC.

I have connected the PC with wireless and tethering, it still will not verify location. I notice when I shop Lowe's or Home Depot, it keeps changing my location and never even comes close to where I am at. I am in central Virginia and I have been located as far away as Colorado.


My issues have to stem from being forced to use the phone as a hotspot due to my cell internet provider.

They could build the most beautiful track in the world, but that wouldn't guarantee that people would actually attend. This is horse racing.

You have a point. I am a fan of all racing, whether two legged or four, two wheels or four. Back in the day my friends and I would bet each other on the pig races at the LA County Fair. The guy whose pig finished the worst of 4 bought the next round of beers. Of course living in Southern California until finally escaping a dozen years ago, and the fact they did not get OTBs till the mid 80's I attended a lot of live horse racing events.


As much as I hate to say it other than wanting to visit as many tracks as possible the on track experience does not compare to other sports involving racing. Live auto racing is a far more exciting experience than watching on TV. Can you say the same about horse racing? If you stay at home and watch TVG, you don't have to worry about getting in the wrong line and not getting a bet down, or listening to some ranting idiot that blames the jockey for his losing $2 win bet.


The last live racing I bet on were dogs at Wheeling Island. One of the few remaining USA dog tracks.

As a resident of NC, I am hoping the bill passes. Our Governor, who loves to use the "Veto" stamp, is powerless to stop the bill because both legislative houses have a GOP supermajority. They just over rode the governor's veto on the new State budget which Gov Cooper said he'd veto.
Anyway, I'm glad to see PM wagering added to the Bill. The original version of the Bill excluded PM wagering.

Actually, PM racing and wagering were legalized in TN several years ago.
Another Bill, an Amendment to the initial law legalizing Horse Racing and PM racing is in the works. Titled "Gambling - As introduced, enacts the "Horse Racing Control Act of 2021," authorizing and regulating parimutuel wagering on horse racing. - Amends TCA Title 4; Title 9; Title 39; Title 44 and Title 67."

Tennessee has had legal on line sports wagering for a few years now.
Virginia, is a full gaming and wagering state and has also legalized casino gaming.
In 2021 Voters approved 4 locations out a 5 proposed for the licensing and location of casinos. Danville, Bristol, Chesapeake( Near Norfolk/Newport News/VA Beach) and Dumfries( a Washington DC exurb)

Its a blessing and a curse. ADW's are required by law to verify the physical location of the origin of the wager
I've tried using a VPN to get around this. NYRA Bets and Twin Spires both respond with messages regarding to verifying my location
I have friend who lives in the northwest corner of NJ, He uses the NJ based ADW. From home, he cannot wager because the site "sees" the IP address. That address is based on a server his ISP is using to connect his computer to the internet. That server is located across the river in PA. So, he has to go to the library in town to place his bets. Apparently the server the library is connected to is in fact located in New Jersey.

The geo-location requirements of the ADWs and the sports betting sites are inconsistent. I made some wagers on TS about 15 years ago while in Hawaii - it didn't even prompt me to verify my location. A couple of years ago while living in Illinois, I couldn't access FD or Riverbets because the IP on my laptop and sometimes my phone put me in Indiana. You can be at the mercy of your ISP or your cell phone provider. Maybe it's better now.

If racing does come to the "late to the party" states in the Southeast, let's hope they're not just in it for the money grab, like Illinois. Between the horse racing "surcharge" and the ridiculous license fees for sports betting, it wasn't fun gambling in the Land of Lincoln. Too much vig!
