I sat on a conference call today, trying to solve supply chain problems. Our food distributor has broken down and started their own training school for drivers. But!

They are learning that a shitload of 18-20 yr olds are applying. The jobs pay 70k to start. But the Federal rules say under 21 drivers cannot cross state lines (I didn’t know this) to make deliveries. They have made requests to the Transportation Dept to allow waivers. The Biden boy Buttisomething said no.

My beef prices are going up 12% on Jan 1st.
Coffee is way up.
Milk expected to rise 9% in 22
Shrimp may rise so high that nobody will be buying it.
Shrimpers are starting to go out of business due to prices and some kind of health crisis in the shrimp themselves

I get some stuff from overseas, new charges at the docks are so high some places are throwing fish and other refrigerated stuff off the boats while at sea. The buyers are backing out due to the costs.

There is a tea shortage. Coca Cola owns the tea market for sales to restaurants in the U.S. as of last Friday at noon they had no tea at all in the U.S. Their number 1 seller, Gold Peak is out of stock for the next 2 weeks. Guess what I use………?

Flour resources are getting low. Due to transportation issues.

Believe it or not the potato suppliers are having problems too.

3 days before Thanksgiving 2 trucks carrying 2000 Butterball Turkeys disappeared while traveling across the northern mid west. No sign of the birds or the trucks yet………guess what company they were delivering to………yep….you’re right.

I’m buying from local retail outlets if I can afford their prices. There is a Sam’s club 500 yards behind my business. It’s been a godsend

they just started letting 18-21 yr olds get class a cdls , and with the new federal guidelines those 18-21 cannot cross state lines , this went into effect like within the last week or so. Those of us that are non restricted can use hos (hours of service) exemptions on a lot of product we haul.

How can an 18-21 go in the service, fight in a war, but can't cross a state line for a delivery, what is the reason for this stupidity?

Your post got me to thinking.

We consume a lot of coffee (for 2 people) and I eat a lot of shrimp & salmon (lox).

The lox is about 10 pounds a month.
(One of the only things I can consistently taste.)

Because of your warning, we're going to stock up immediately.

Anything else you can suggest might be going through the roof?

Ok, I guess I need to stop complaining about the high price of steel, aluminum, and shortages of industrial strength garbage bags and walnut shells. I could imagine, Ralph, your mess has you working some long hours.
Dealing with Covid created BS probably only costs me a couple hours a week.

Seriously... It is one of the only foods I can taste & enjoy.

And 10 pounds might be a little low.

Beth went to Costco yesterday and bought me 3 packs of Norwegian Salmon (12 oz each), and 2 packs of this smoked salmon (24 oz each).

I try to stretch that to about 8-10 days.
(I did have to make a concession to farm raised. LOL)

I have a rule... if it isn't really good for me and completely non-toxic, and I can barely taste it, I shouldn't be eating it.

Although the list varies by day - and sometimes by BITE in a meal - many of my favs are just gone.

Rarely do I taste any kind of meat, except for pastrami & corned beef (like 80% flavor). Even ice cream and chocolate sauce are below 50% most of the time.

But, again can vary wildly.

Every day I do the "salt test." Most days salt is 5-10%. I've even stuck a teaspoon of salt in my mouth and couldn't taste it. (Spit it out, of course.)

So, when I run into some food... any, really... that consistently gives me pleasure & gratification, I will make sure that I've got plenty on hand.

Salmon is my goto breakfast when I get up at 3:30-4am for an early work day. (My vitamin B12 megadosing has caused me to not need near as much sleep.)
